Position Summary

The Specialty Industries Welder is responsible for fitting, fabricating, and welding custom metal assemblies with a primary focus on ferrous materials such as carbon steel, mild steel, and structural steel . This position requires strong blueprint reading, precision fit-up, welding, and fabrication skills, with an emphasis on producing high-quality work while maintaining dimensional accuracy and production requirements.

The Specialty Industries Welder interprets shop drawings, weld symbols, work instructions, and specifications to determine material requirements, assembly sequence, fit-up requirements, and welding procedures. The position performs welding and fabrication while maintaining structural integrity, dimensional accuracy, weld appearance, and overall product quality.

The ideal candidate has experience in custom fabrication and ferrous welding , is comfortable working with varying material thicknesses and tight tolerances, and takes pride in producing clean, consistent, high-quality welds.

Core Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, work orders, and fabrication specifications to determine material requirements, dimensions, tolerances, weld requirements, and assembly sequence.
• Fit, fabricate, tack, and weld custom carbon steel, mild steel, structural steel, and other ferrous metal components .
• Perform MIG/GMAW and Flux-Cored/FCAW welding processes as required by the job, material, and welding procedure.
• Prepare, clean, and position materials prior to welding to ensure proper weld quality and fit-up.
• Lay out, position, align, and fit components using measuring tools, fixtures, clamps, jigs, and welding equipment .
• Verify dimensions, alignment, and tolerances before, during, and after welding.
• Inspect completed welds for quality, appearance, penetration, consistency, and conformance to specifications .
• Identify and correct fit-up issues, weld distortion, warping, and alignment concerns before final welding.
• Apply appropriate welding techniques to control heat input, weld distortion, shrinkage, and dimensional changes .
• Perform grinding, cleaning, and weld preparation as needed to meet quality and finish requirements.
• Operate shop equipment safely, including grinders, torches, welding equipment, positioners, overhead cranes, forklifts, and other fabrication equipment as trained and authorized.
• Use precision measuring equipment such as tape measures, squares, calipers, levels, and other measurement tools to verify part dimensions.
• Maintain clean, organized, and efficient work areas in accordance with 5S, safety, and housekeeping expectations .
• Communicate material shortages, drawing questions, production concerns, quality issues, and equipment problems to supervision promptly.
• Follow welding procedures, quality requirements, PPE requirements, and all applicable company safety procedures.
• Support continuous improvement efforts focused on weld quality, productivity, efficiency, scrap reduction, and rework reduction .
• Maintain consistent production while meeting established quality and scheduling expectations.
• Take ownership of finished work and ensure completed assemblies meet customer and JR Metal Works standards.

Qualifications & Skills

Required

• 2+ years of experience in custom metal fabrication and welding.
• Strong experience reading and interpreting blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, and fabrication specifications .
• Demonstrated experience welding ferrous metals, particularly carbon steel, mild steel, and structural steel .
• Experience with MIG/GMAW and Flux-Cored/FCAW welding .
• Ability to perform precision fit-up and welding on custom-fabricated components.
• Ability to accurately measure, fit, align, and inspect fabricated components.
• Experience identifying and correcting weld distortion, fit-up issues, warping, and alignment problems .
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing clean, consistent, high-quality welds.
• Must be clean, organized, dependable, and able to maintain an orderly work area.
• Must own a welding helmet for completion of JR Metal Works' on-site welding test.
• Must successfully complete the JR Metal Works welding assessment, which includes blueprint reading and a hands-on welding test .

Preferred / Plus

• Experience with precision or tight-tolerance custom fabrication .
• Experience working with carbon steel, mild steel, and structural steel .
• Experience working with varying material thicknesses.
• Experience using precision measuring equipment .
• Experience with grinding, weld preparation, and post-weld finishing.
• Previous experience in a custom manufacturing, fabrication, or metalworking environment .
