This is a joint appointment between the World Languages and Cultures department and the McKeown School of Education, and plays a central leadership role in the university’s Spanish teacher licensure programs and carries significant responsibility for teaching, program coordination, hiring of adjuncts, field placement, advising, and collaboration across academic units and with state licensure offices.The successful candidate will serve as the Lead Faculty member for Spanish teacher licensure programs, including the 4+1 BA/MEd with Initial Licensure and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Spanish, which offers Elementary and Secondary tracks at both the Initial and Professional licensure levels. These programs are jointly supported by the World Languages and Cultures department and the McKeown School of Education to ensure alignment with disciplinary standards, pedagogical best practices, and evolving state licensure requirements.Salem State University offers an environment where academic excellence and student success are paramount. Duties include teaching, advising, scholarship and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.Programmatic ResponsibilitiesTeaching (or adjunct hiring) responsibilities will be distributed across the two units and will focus primarily on licensure-related coursework, including but not limited to:Spanish Methods I and II courses with integrated, co-requisite field experiencesStudent teaching seminar and practicumAdvanced-track courses such as Action Research and Clinical sequencesElementary and intermediate Spanish teachingOversight and coordination of field placements, practica, and student teachingOngoing collaboration with the Licensure OfficeSupervising practitioners, and school partners across PK–12 districtsEngage in service activities in both the Department of World Languages and Cultures and the McKeown School of EducationCollaborate across disciplines to align licensure curricula, assessment practices, and clinical expectationsParticipate actively in state, regional, and national professional organizations related to world language educationContribute to professional advocacy efforts supporting world language education, teacher preparation, and student access (e.g., Seal of Biliteracy initiatives, HSI, state frameworks)Depending on the student enrollment trends and the department needs, it is possible, but not guaranteed, to renew the temporary full time position in the future academic years.***DO NOT APPLY ON MASSCAREERS.*** *** Applications submitted on MassCareers will not be considered.***Applicants must apply on the Salem State Career site to be considered.QualificationsRequired Qualifications:PhD or EdD in Spanish, World Language Education, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related fieldSuperior proficiency in SpanishPossession of or eligibility for Spanish teacher licensure at the PK–12 levelDemonstrated expertise in proficiency-based language instruction and assessmentExperience teaching, mentoring, and/or supervising pre-service teachersExperience and ability to coordinate clinical experiences and work effectively with PK–12 partnersPreferred Qualifications:Experience working in jointly administered teacher licensure programsFamiliarity with Massachusetts DESE licensure requirementsRecord of professional engagement, scholarship, or advocacy in world language educationExperience with accreditation, clinical partnerships, or program-level assessmentStrong advising and collaborative skills appropriate to a joint appointmentDemonstrated commitment to equity, access, and community-engaged teacher preparationSalem State University seeks faculty and librarians whose teaching, scholarship, and service will contribute to student success, academic excellence, and the university’s public mission.
