Job TitlePatient Registration SpecialistJob DescriptionTo accurately and efficiently register patients for diagnostic testing, ambulatory surgery, out-patient procedures, in-house admissions, and/or treatment in the emergency department.Responsibilities• Registers each patient accurately, courteously, and timely.• Greets patients and visitors promptly upon arrival.• Obtains correct and complete demographic and insurance information from patients and guarantors.• Enters registration information accurately into the AS-400 system.• Creates and maintains complete patient financial folders, including insurance documentation, consent forms, identification, and claim forms.• Obtains necessary patient signatures and insurance documentation.• Accurately enters registration and program codes into applicable systems.• Documents Worker's Compensation claim information and forwards documentation for verification.• Ensures timely patient arrival to the appropriate treatment area and notifies departments of patient arrivals.• Collects deductibles, deposits, co-pays, and other patient financial obligations.• Assists with promissory notes, credit applications, and indigent care applications when appropriate.• Reviews patient folders for completeness and accuracy before submission to the Business Office.• Investigates and resolves problem accounts.• Verifies insurance information including names, policy numbers, and group numbers.• Assists as an extension of the Business Office during evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.• Registers direct admissions and maintains accurate admission logs.• Assigns beds for in-house patients based on diagnosis, physician orders, financial class, patient preference, and availability.• Relieves switchboard personnel for breaks and meal periods as needed.• Initiates insurance pre-certifications and forwards documentation to Utilization Review.• Coordinates demographic information requests from physician offices.• Assists with PBX coverage to ensure uninterrupted telephone operations.• Promotes quality customer service by acknowledging customers promptly, communicating effectively, and addressing concerns professionally.• Creates a positive customer experience through effective telephone and interpersonal communication skills.• Supports therapeutic interactions by demonstrating empathy and encouraging two-way communication.• Performs other duties as assigned.• Complies with all policies and standards.QualificationsEducation• High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.• Post High School Vocational/Specialized Training preferred.Experience• Six (6) to twelve (12) months previous hospital experience preferred.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities• Ability to input data into computer programs.• Ability to answer telephones professionally.• Ability to compose letters and correspondence.• Ability to interview patients and gather information.• Ability to schedule appointments.• Ability to maintain filing systems and logs.• Ability to proofread and research information.• Proficiency with general office equipment including calculators, fax machines, PBX systems, photocopiers, computers, and peripheral equipment.• Ability to work effectively with patients, providers, staff, vendors, and community agencies.• Ability to manage multiple interruptions and work in a fast-paced environment.• Ability to respond appropriately to emergency or crisis situations.Licenses & Certifications• No specific licenses or certifications required.
