Senior Dietitian - Primary Care

Job Description Under the direction of the Director of Clinical Nutrition, the senior dietitian provides quality nutrition care and education to patients and family members. They assess the nutritional status of patients and recommend appropriate nutrition therapy based on each patient’s needs. The position involves delivering nutrition counseling to patients and families, supporting patient‑focused care within assigned units, collaborating on departmental initiatives and education programs, and adhering to the department and hospital’s philosophies, standards, objectives, and policies and procedures. Responsibilities Evaluates the nutritional status of patients by reviewing electronic medical record information and interdisciplinary team input, applying knowledge of nutrition screening and assessment to determine specific nutritional needs. Performs nutrition‑focused physical examinations. Develops population‑specific clinical nutrition assessment skills. Documents pertinent findings in the medical record as per policy. Provides quality nutrition counseling to patients and family members as indicated. Evaluates nutrition care plans for effectiveness and recommends changes as needed, using professional judgment to adapt and apply guidelines, protocols, and standards of care to evolving patient needs. Participates in interdisciplinary rounds as needed and communicates effectively with healthcare team members. Assists with the training and development of clinical nutrition staff. Assists with discharge planning as needed. Precepts dietetic interns, instructing them on required competencies and completing student evaluations. Coordinates departmental projects, including nutrition‑related in‑services, interdepartmental education programs, lectures, and community‑focused initiatives, and participates in external speaking events to promote service and education. Assists with the development and updates of nutrition education materials. Presents department journal clubs. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution, with completion of an ACEND‑accredited dietetic internship. Two or more years of experience, including a dietetic internship. Must be a registered dietitian (RD) from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Certified Dietitian Nutritionist (CDN) from the NYS Department of Education Office of the Professions preferred, not required. Compensation Salary range for the role is $58,661 – $84,000 annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need.
