Phlebotomist - Inpatient

Job Overview The Phlebotomist conducts pre-analytical functions and performs phlebotomy responsibilities on patients ranging from newborns to elderly, ensuring a positive and caring experience. Schedule Start times: 3:00 AM | 4:00 AM | 5:00 AM (rotates) Weekends: Approximately every other weekend Holidays: 2–3 per year Weekly hours: 40 Shift: Day Key Responsibilities Obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients, following proper identification protocols and techniques to maintain specimen integrity. Prioritizes collections and transports specimens to meet established turnaround times. Adheres to OSHA and ThedaCare/department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment. Provides training for new lab and non‑lab team members in phlebotomy to retain top talent. Performs specimen‑related computer functions accurately, including entering physician orders, processing cancellations, and entering add‑on tests to ensure regulatory compliance. Enters, activates, and/or reviews physician’s orders in the system, ensuring patient safety and quality. Maintains supplies and assists with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies for patient care responsibilities. Performs special specimen collections (e.g., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow up as required by law. Qualifications High school diploma or GED (preferred). Must be 18 years of age. Completion of BLS Certification required for candidates working at ThedaCare Medical Center – Wild Rose. Physical Demands Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to 25 pounds without assistance. Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens while performing job duties. Work Environment Medical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials. Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments. Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. Occasional contact with aggressive and/or combative patients. Use of computers throughout the work day; frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers.
