Accountant I Work Location: Lisle, IL - Intervarsity Press Schedule: Full time To advance the purpose of InterVarsity Press, this position will primarily serve authors and other royalty-based payees by providing accurate record keeping and reporting for royalty and licensing transactions. This position will also serve staff and management by ensuring proper accounting of financial records according to generally accepted accounting principles and InterVarsity policies and procedures. Contribute to IVP's Royalty Accounting by: Reviewing and understanding the financial terms of royalty contracts/agreements. Entering of royalty contracts and other relevant data into the accounting system. Auditing quarterly, semi-annual & annual royalty reports and entering necessary adjustments. Maintaining payee contact information Assisting authors, agents, beneficiaries, and Editorial staff with royalty related inquiries. Contribute to IVP's General Accounting by: Serving as backup for preparing journal entries utilizing applicable systems, reconciling general ledger accounts and resolving discrepancies. Preparing audit workpapers as assigned; working with external auditors to provide an understanding of processes and supporting documentation. Developing operational procedures and documentation of process flows including development of checklists. Provide Financial Reporting by: Supporting internal customers by researching questions and investigating variances. Ensuring proper retention, filing, and handling of accounting records. Preparing other reports and assisting in special projects as required. Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by: Providing suggestions and ideas on process and workflow improvement. Completing any other duties as required Maintain technical and professional growth and development by: Staying current with computer programs InterVarsity Press uses to support the above functions. Attending training as necessary. Qualifications Affirmation of InterVarsity's Statement of Faith Effective oral and written communication skills Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, accounting processes, and procedures Understanding of federal & state laws and regulations Ability to handle multiple priorities and manage time effectively Ability to maintain accurate records and files Ability to take charge of tasks and work independently without close supervision Ability to develop procedures for doing work Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines Open to learn new concepts, methods and skills Strong communication and analytical skills and attention to detail Demonstrated ability and commitment to work in a diverse team environment Prudence with confidential information Flexibility to attend the Urbana Student Missions Conference every six years, Dec. 26-Jan.1, and National Staff Conference every three years (the year after Urbana), approximately Jan. 2-7 Experience and Educational Requirements Experience required as described in the section below (dependent on the level of the position posted). Relevant higher education will be taken into account and may reduce the experience required. Levels in Job Family (Posting Will State The Relevant Level At The Beginning Of The Posting) Accounting Specialist - Level 5 The Accounting Specialist will be responsible for all of the above and will have two years of relevant accounting experience. They will have experience working within complex financial systems, and experience with royalty systems is preferred. Their work may be performed with or under oversight of other accountants. They may also carry out more clerical tasks such as updating contact data. Accountant I - Level 6 The Accountant I will have at least three years of relevant accounting experience and typically an undergraduate degree. They may have relevant accounting certifications. They will be responsible for all of the above responsibilities as well as additional responsibilities. These will include analyzing accounts, records, reports, advances receivable and royalties payable, general and subsidiary ledgers and other accounting documents for accuracy and completeness; investigating and resolving accounting problems for areas of responsibility; preparing monthly financial information and analyzing variances. They will assist with external audits. They will have experience working within complex financial systems, and experience with royalty systems is preferred.
