Surgical Services Assistant II- Operating Room- PRN- Days

Job Description This role provides fundamental care and services to the patient, family, and the unit environment. The scope of service encompasses patient safety, customer service, providing a safe and clean environment for the surgical patient. Responsibilities General Duties Ensures O.R. remains clean, clear of clutter and necessary supplies and equipment are available and acceptable. Proper cleaning, care and placement of essential equipment needed for scheduled cases such as arthroscopy pump, fluoroscopy beds, video equipment and overhead tables. Ensure orderliness and efficiency in the performance of: cleaning utility areas, hallways, restrooms, equipment, shelves, cart racks, scrub sinks; stocking supplies and checking for outdated items; checking and recording temperature of refrigerators and reporting to Maintenance if repair is needed; supporting by running errands to Blood Bank, Central Service, Pathology, X-Ray department and remaining available while on duty in the designated area. Transport specimens at the direction of the RN. Assist with positioning and moving patients from bed to stretcher according to RN instructions; transport floor patients to O.R., demonstrating sound judgment and understanding of the hospital code system. Remove unneeded equipment and return it to proper storage area. Perform surgical shave preps as needed per O.R. prep guidelines and/or surgeon preference. Assist circulating nurse with tying of sterile gown. Under direction of RN assist with surgical preps and holding of extremities. Get case cart from Central and deliver them to the proper O.R. room prior to scheduled start time. Communication Shares pertinent patient information and maintains open communication regarding patient care needs between all team members and ancillary departments. Reports observations and data to appropriate team members (RN, AAC, and/or surgeon). Leadership Demonstrates leadership skills such as the ability to motivate, educate, and mentor peers; acts rapidly and calmly during emergencies; provides necessary items called for by the O.R. team; cooperates in the performance of all duties within scope of the job description; attends unit meetings, required in‑services and education programs; adheres to established standards in personal appearance and conduct. Dress code is followed. Conduct is consistent with the ExCEL core values. Attendance is prompt and regular. Follows chain of command. Productivity Maintains orderliness and efficiency of the work environment according to AORN Standards to ensure turnaround time between cases is at a minimum. Displays flexibility, accepting change in assignments. Understands fiscal responsibility by utilizing time, equipment, and supplies appropriately. Safety Calls maintenance for necessary repairs and stocks supplies in room according to standards. Ensures beds, stretchers, and carts are in appropriate positions for patient safety. Uses good hand washing and aseptic technique, universal precautions, isolation procedures, and keeps the unit clean. Disposes of all waste according to hospital procedures and transports waste to central location. Addresses safety hazards and reports them to the appropriate person; knows location of all fire alarms, extinguishers and hoses. Handles spillage and hazardous spills according to hospital policy. Returns to unit promptly in case of patient emergency, fire, or disaster and reports to the person in charge. Handles oxygen tanks safely. Ensures patient consent is signed and then signs SDS record. Understands sterile technique.
