Description

The Paraprofessional is a frontline youth development professional responsible for supporting the supervision, engagement, safety, inclusion, and development of participants within the after-school program. Depending on program and participant needs, the Paraprofessional may be assigned to support an individual child, provide classroom-based support to a group with multiple students requiring additional assistance, or assist with supporting the overall supervision and engagement of an assigned group. This position works closely with Group Leaders, Activity Specialists, Program Directors, school personnel, and other program staff to help ensure all participants, including neurodivergent students and students with behavioral, social-emotional, developmental, or other support needs, can safely and meaningfully participate in after-school activities.

The Paraprofessional must be patient, caring, positive, dependable, flexible, and able to build trusting relationships with young people while maintaining appropriate expectations and professional boundaries. The position requires comfort and experience working with children who may demonstrate challenging behaviors and the ability to respond calmly and positively while supporting their successful participation in the program.

Qualifications

• Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Education: High school diploma or GED/equivalent required.

• Experience: Previous experience working with children or adolescents in after-school programs, schools, special education settings, childcare, summer camps, community programs, or similar youth-serving environments required. Experience working as a Department of Education (DOE) paraprofessional or sub-para is preferred.

• Behavioral Support: Experience working with children who demonstrate challenging behaviors and the ability to respond using patient, positive, developmentally appropriate strategies.

• Neurodiversity & Inclusion: Experience supporting neurodivergent children and/or children with varying behavioral, developmental, social-emotional, or learning needs strongly preferred.

• Youth Engagement: Ability to build positive relationships with young people and engage them in structured activities while maintaining appropriate expectations and boundaries.

• Supervision: Ability to actively supervise individual participants and groups of children while maintaining awareness of safety and participant needs.

• Personal Qualities: Must demonstrate patience, compassion, positivity, dependability, flexibility, consistency, and a genuine interest in supporting children.

• Communication: Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate participant concerns appropriately.

• Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with program staff, school personnel, and site leadership.

• Professionalism: Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, sound judgment, confidentiality, and willingness to learn.

• Adaptability: Ability to transition between individual student support, classroom paraprofessional support, and Group Leader responsibilities based on daily program needs.

• Ability to complete all required background checks, clearances, trainings, certifications, and documentation required by RTS, school partners, funders, and applicable regulatory agencies.
