Consumer Safety Inspector

Responsibilities As a Consumer Safety Inspector, you will be responsible for inspecting and ensuring the safety of meat, poultry, and processed egg products. Duties include collecting samples, performing field tests, documenting findings, maintaining effective personal contacts with internal and external stakeholders, and recommending corrective actions to ensure conformance with established standards. Qualifications Specialized experience: experience that provided knowledge of the properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities for human consumption. Examples of relevant positions include consumer safety inspector, inspection aid, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or related positions. GS‑5: At least 52 weeks of qualifying experience in independently carrying out routine, standard assignments involving regulated food commodities such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or pharmaceuticals. Experience includes collecting samples, performing field tests, developing written reports, and communicating findings. GS‑7: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑5 level, performing standard and recurrent duties independently. GS‑8: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑7 level, including working with Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, basic SSOP and HACCP principles, basic mathematics and elementary statistical concepts, and interpreting conclusions. GS‑9: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑8 level, with additional independent duties such as recommending export refusals and providing temporary coverage at outside locations. Experience may include paid, unpaid, and volunteer work such as Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and other community or professional organizations. Qualified volunteers will receive credit for all qualifying experience. Benefits As a federal employee, you and your family will have access to a comprehensive benefits package.
