Job Summary The primary purpose of the Radiation Therapist position is to provide direct patient care in the Department of Radiation Oncology. The scope of the position is defined by the New Mexico Environmental Department’s Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Program, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists Practice Standards, and the Standards of Care for Radiation Therapy Services for the Department of Radiation Oncology. Ensures accurate treatment delivery and data capture. Demonstrates sound clinical judgment and adherence to accurate treatment and simulation delivery. Gathers necessary set‑up aids and prepares room and equipment for patient. Demonstrates necessary manual dexterity and psychomotor skills to operate complex radiation‑emitting treatment units. Works under stress and pressure. Adapts without difficulty to changes in work schedule or assigned area as departmental patient load dictates. Visually monitors patient for unusual reaction and events and reports same to radiation oncologist throughout the course of treatment. Explains treatment procedure to the patient, answers patient and family questions, defers those not within competence to oncologist. Reinforces advice on reactions and care. Recognizes patient needs and responds appropriately. Refers patient to allied health specialists. Performs and maintains quality assurance activities including compliance with departmental QA practices, consent form verification, daily treatment records, machine QA, portal image review, prescription checks, attendance at planning clinic, and documentation of mandatory quality control activities. Competency Management Ensures appropriate clinical skills are learned and maintained. Maintains departmentally identified base competencies, including calculations. Documented competency assessment criteria. Attends lectures, seminars, and in‑services to stay abreast of new techniques and comply with licensure requirements. Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills and professional behaviors. Works within scope of practice and competency level. Clinical Instruction and Evaluation Demonstrates practice‑related learning, shares knowledge with students and peers, participates in departmental learning initiatives, and orients and teaches new students/therapists rotating to the unit. Adherence to Policies Adheres to department policies, guidelines, and procedures. Completes internal variance forms within 24 hours. Maintains dress code, attendance, and Kronos time management. Manages supplies and equipment resources responsibly. Exhibits initiative and willingness to take instruction and guidance. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Graduate of a JRCERT accredited program in radiation therapy or suitable equivalent. Certified and registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy. Must be certified and licensed by the New Mexico Environment Department’s Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Program within 30 days of hire. Documentation of formal Clinical Instructor training led by MD Anderson School of Health Professions. Active participation in instruction and evaluation of radiation therapy students.
