Opening Date: 07/27/2026 GENERAL PURPOSE:
Performs unskilled and limited semiskilled manual work of a routine nature, including the collection of residential refuse, trash and recycled items. SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general guidance and direction of Sanitation Supervisor and/or crew leaderman. SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Collects refuse, including household garbage, green waste, white goods and waste oil.
• Operates packer control on truck.
• Cleans and empties trucks.
• Required to perform unskilled and semiskilled labor, such as maintaining Transfer Station building, grounds and recycling activities. Also required to work in confined space.
• Assist driver with the cleaning of refuse truck
• Assist with the city-wide garbage bag distribution. PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
Can with the proper license (Class B CDL) perform duties as a backup Truck Driver/Crew Leaderman. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED. Six months refuse laborer experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to understand Hand Signals and follow oral instructions. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
None. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Required to wear protective clothing. Lifting belts, gloves, safety glasses and safety vests. Brooms, shovels, lawn mowers and grass edgers. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Constant lifting and carrying of residential garbage bags and trash. Most common weights are 50-100 lbs. Constant reaching, bending and twisting. Extended periods of standing and fast paced walking with intermittent periods of riding on truck. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Required to work outdoors, subject to adverse weather conditions and traffic hazards. Exposure to caustic substances and a variety of other chemicals discarded in the garbage. Exposure to respiratory hazards, e.g., exhaust fumes, dust, insects and odors. Exposure to physical hazards such as sharp objects, (broken glass, hypodermic syringes) dog bites. Loud to moderate noises due to engine and hydraulics operation.
