Job Title
Under the general supervision of the Recreation Center Manager, the employee is responsible for providing various types and styles of physical fitness instruction.
Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Instruction. Develops, demonstrates and implements fitness routines to ensure exercise is completed safely and in accordance with City, fitness and safety practices, protocol and procedures.
- Acts as a point of reference and resource regarding instruction and fitness activities.
- Maintains cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications.
- Develops and choreographs fitness routines.
- Develops class curriculum.
- Implements class curriculum.
- Performs assessment of class curriculum goals and objectives.
- Evaluates and monitors class participants while performing routines to ensure safe and accurate execution.
- Monitors and assesses class participants' physical cues to ensure safety.
- Compiles playlists to coincide with routines.
- Provides verbal instructions and explanation to participants.
- Demonstrates routines and physical execution for participants.
- Assists class participants with fitness routines.
- Encourages group socialization with class participants.
- Adheres to all established safety practices and protocol.
Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of one (1) year of previous work experience as a fitness instructor.
- Possess CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Possess AFAA Fitness Certification.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.

- Verbal skills to effectively communicate with general public, class participants, supervisor, and the general public.
- Reading skills to understand and interpret safety and fitness enforcement directives, procedures, and instructions.
- Math skills to perform basic calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
- Listening skills to take cues from and assess participants.
- Ability to utilize various first aid techniques in order to provide emergency assistance.
- Ability to perform CPR in order to assist critically ill individuals.
- Ability to develop and devise routines.
- Ability to develop and devise curriculum.
- Ability to assemble playlists conducive to various routines.
- Ability to maintain a professional attitude.
- Ability to deal with all contacts in a courteous and patient manner.
- Ability to handle upset or irate individuals.
- Ability to handle dynamic situations in a calm and courteous manner.
- Ability to work with little or no supervision.
Physical Demands The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; recurring lifting moderately heavy items such as record boxes. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity. Work Environment The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, etc. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
