Emergency Medicine Physician

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines the award amount (up to $200,000) and the eligibility period (one to five years) after review by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below, as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) specified in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. United States citizenship: Non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Education: Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion. Licensure: Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training: Completion of an accredited core specialty training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency options: Approved ACGME or AOA program and subsequent board certification. One year of post‑medical‐school training (internship or first year of residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under a full license. Non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the United States, performed under a full license, related to the position. Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in an accredited residency program who meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, may only be appointed intermittently, are not considered independent practitioners, and will not be privileged. Their scope of practice allows certain restricted duties under supervision. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged. Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer for reasonable exceptions to residency requirements based on the applicant’s record of experience, accomplishments, performance, and qualifications. English language proficiency: Physicians in direct patient‑care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7402(d) and § 7407(d). Preferred experience: Emergency Department experience within the past year. Paid time off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and a possible 5‑day paid absence for CME). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution. Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care (many federal programs can be carried into retirement). Meet medically related documentation requirements set forth by the Joint Commission. Duties may include but are not limited to: Evaluation and treatment of multiple body systems: skin, eye, ear, nose, throat, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urologic, reproductive, nervous, endocrine, musculoskeletal, and hematology. Initial and ongoing assessment of patient’s medical, physical, and psychosocial status. Obtain and document a comprehensive medical and psychological history and physical examination. Order appropriate diagnostic tests. Review and interpret laboratory results and take appropriate action. Formulate and record diagnostic impressions. Refer patients to consultations with specialty clinics. Provide medical advice to patients, families, and community health providers by telephone. Manage chronic medical problems with acute exacerbations. Manage minor acute medical problems. Document patient care in the electronic health record within prescribed time limits. Enter orders into CPRS for medications, consults, testing, etc. Demonstrate current clinical practice. Attend medical center and community meetings, seminars, and conferences. Follow processes established by the Chief of ED, guidelines, MCM, and VHA policies. Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
