Position Summary

The Assistant Store Manager reports to the Store Manager and supports the daily operations of the convenience store. This role helps ensure the store is properly staffed, clean, organized, well-stocked, and operating according to company standards. When the Store Manager is not on-site, the Assistant Store Manager helps oversee store operations, complete required daily, weekly, and monthly paperwork, maintain accurate sales and inventory records, and support compliance with applicable state and federal regulations, particularly those governing alcohol and tobacco sales. The Assistant Store Manager also assists with employee training, coaching, scheduling, and performance feedback while demonstrating the customer service and operational standards expected of the entire team.

Key Responsibilities

Store Operations and Standards

• Help ensure the store is open, operational, and appropriately staffed during all scheduled business hours.
• Maintain an organized, clean, safe, and appealing store environment, including sales floors, restrooms, common areas, and exterior spaces.
• Monitor store conditions and ensure trash is emptied, gas pumps are wiped down, and exterior areas are maintained as needed.
• Ensure merchandise is properly stocked, presented, and priced according to company standards.
• Order supplies and assist with inventory management as needed.
• Help identify and communicate operational concerns to the Store Manager.

Customer Service and Sales

• Provide friendly, professional, and exceptional customer service with every guest interaction.
• Lead by example by demonstrating positive customer service and appropriate workplace behavior.
• Help resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
• Ensure sales transactions are recorded accurately, including fuel, lottery, and convenience store merchandise.
• Communicate merchandise pricing concerns to the appropriate team member or department.

Employee Support and Development

• Assist the Store Manager with employee training, onboarding, and ongoing coaching.
• Provide constructive feedback to employees to support performance and accountability.
• Help coordinate and maintain employee schedules to ensure adequate coverage across all operating hours.
• Monitor daily work assignments and help ensure tasks are completed efficiently and consistently.
• Assist with shift coverage when needed, including occasional evenings, weekends, overnight shifts, and call-outs.
• Reinforce company policies, procedures, and expectations through consistent leadership and positive example.

Compliance, Safety, and Security

• Support employee training and compliance with applicable state and federal laws, including regulations governing alcohol and tobacco sales.
• Ensure employees follow required age-verification procedures and complete applicable training or certification programs.
• Follow company procedures for safety, security, incident reporting, and emergency response.
• Help maintain a safe environment for employees, customers, and visitors.

Administrative and Financial Responsibilities

• Complete required daily, weekly, and monthly paperwork when the Store Manager is not working.
• Assist with inventory counts, inventory records, and verification of merchandise costs and receipts.
• Assist with bank deposits as directed by the Store Manager.
• Help maintain accurate store records and communicate discrepancies or concerns to management.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to lead by example, support coworkers, and provide constructive feedback.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail environment.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the Store Manager and store team.
• Basic computer and point-of-sale (POS) skills, with the ability to learn company systems and procedures.
• Dependability, sound judgment, and a commitment to following company policies and applicable regulations.
• Flexible availability to help cover store operations when staffing needs arise.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous retail, convenience store, or customer service experience
• Previous supervisory or team leadership experience

Additional Requirements

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and insurance coverage as required by law.
• Must be able to work on-site and maintain a flexible schedule based on business needs.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

• Ability to work effectively and accurately in a fast-paced retail environment.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform other movements required for store operations.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull merchandise and other items weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Ability to perform cleaning, stocking, and general store maintenance duties.
• Ability to work in a refrigerated cooler for periods of up to 30 minutes at a time.
• Ability to work approximately 40 hours per week as business needs require.
• Ability to perform the duties of a store associate and assist with shift coverage when necessary.
