Anesthesiologist

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the study was completed.
• Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training: completed an approved core specialty residency leading to board certification, or, for certain states, an approved residency/fellowship; or a year of post‑medical school training (internship or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice; or a non‑U.S. residency followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the United States where duties relate to this position. PRPs are eligible if currently enrolled in an approved residency and meet other criteria.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Completion of anesthesiology residency, BLS and ACLS certification, and board certification or eligibility by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
• Physical requirement: ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 25 pounds frequently, to move objects.

Duties

• Open continuous announcement – all qualified applicants will be referred to the hiring manager weekly.
• Responsible for conducting pre‑anesthetic history and physical, formulating anesthetic plans, inducing anesthesia, performing invasive monitoring and regional techniques, maintaining depth of anesthesia, supporting life functions, recognizing abnormal patient responses, and initiating CPR in and outside the operating room.
• Provide direct professional observation and resuscitation until the patient regains vital function, and keep complete and legible documentation of the peri‑operative course.
• Maintain continuing education activities.
• Supervise nurse anesthetists, residents, medical students, and other non‑anesthesiology personnel.
• Assess, consult, and prepare patients for anesthesia including pre‑operative examinations.
• Provide anesthesia for surgeries, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures, and manage patients accordingly.
• Monitor and restore homeostasis during the peri‑operative period and in critically ill patients.
• Diagnose and treat painful syndromes and provide cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation.
• Evaluate respiratory function and apply respiratory therapy.
• Supervise, teach and evaluate performance of medical and paramedical personnel in anesthesia, respiratory and critical care.
• Administrative involvement in hospitals, medical schools and outpatient facilities as needed.
• Provide anesthesia services at all locations where FNCVACHCS performs surgeries or procedures.
• Participate in quality improvement efforts.
• Accountable to Section Chief – Anesthesiology for effective delivery of anesthetic care in compliance with VA and VHA directives and The Joint Commission accreditation standards.
• On‑call coverage is required.
• Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
