Communications Director

The Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center (MSBEC) is a 501(c)3 organization based in Mount Shasta, CA founded on bioregional principles and indigenous wisdom to protect, restore, and advocate for the ecological integrity of the Mount Shasta bioregion, a landscape defined by ancient forest, volcanic geology, and wild rivers filled with outstanding biodiversity. The Communications Director leads the storytelling, messaging, and public engagement for the Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center. This role is responsible for managing the full spectrum of communications — from social media and action alerts to blog posts, newsletters, campaign messaging, educational materials, and talking points.

The ideal candidate is a strong writer, strategic communicator, and creative thinker with a background in environmental issues, conservation, watershed protection, climate resilience, public lands, or related field(s.) This position requires someone who can translate complex environmental and policy issues into accessible, compelling narratives that inspire public engagement and action, including membership & donation solicitations.

Also, the ideal candidate is a talented multitasker. The position requires someone who can understand and keep up with all the programs of MSBEC.

Strategic Communications & Messaging

• • Implement organizational communication strategies that strengthen public engagement, advocacy, volunteerism, fundraising, and community visibility.
  • Shape consistent messaging and branding across all platforms and campaigns.
  • Create compelling narratives that connect environmental policy, watershed protection, climate resilience, public lands, and community issues to everyday audiences.
  • Develop talking points, campaign messaging, FAQs, and educational materials with program leads.

Digital Communications & Content Creation

• • Manage and maintain MSBEC’s digital presence across social media platforms, website content, blogs, newsletters, and email campaigns.
  • Create content for the “full drip” of communications including:
  • Social media posts and campaigns
  • Action alerts
  • Blog posts and feature stories
  • Email newsletters
  • Advocacy messaging
  • Educational content
  • Flyers
  • Talking points
  • Coordinate content calendars and communication timelines for campaigns, events, and organizational priorities.
  • Track analytics and engagement metrics to improve communications effectiveness and audience growth.

Advocacy & Public Engagement

• • Support advocacy campaigns by translating technical policy or environmental information into accessible public education materials.
  • Collaborate with program staff to communicate opportunities for public participation, comment periods, hearings, educational events, and community actions.
  • Assist in developing outreach strategies that build public support for conservation initiatives and community resilience efforts.
  • Support coalition communications and collaborative campaigns with partner organizations.

Media & Public Relations

• • Assist with media outreach, interviews, and press inquiries as needed.
  • Help support organizational visibility and public education efforts through strategic communications.
  • Assist staff and leadership with the preparation of talking points and public-facing materials.

Education & Experience

• • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, environmental studies, political science, marketing, or related field preferred.
  • 3+ years of professional communications, advocacy, environmental organizing, or public engagement experience required.
  • Demonstrated background in environmental issues, conservation, climate, watershed protection, public lands, environmental justice, or related work strongly required
  • Demonstrated experience managing multi-platform communications campaigns.

Skills & Abilities

• • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Ability to adapt tone and messaging for different audiences and platforms.
  • Strong understanding of social media strategy, email communications, digital organizing, and audience engagement.
  • Experience with WordPress strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, email platforms, and social media management tools required.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a small-team environment.
  • Professional and diplomatic communication skills necessary,

Other Requirements

• • Reliable access to the internet, personal cell phone, and laptop computer.
  • Valid driver’s license, insurance, and access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to occasionally work evenings or weekends for events, campaigns, or community meetings.
  • Ability to travel throughout Northern California and occasionally statewide.

As a small nonprofit organization, MSBEC occasionally operates with an “all hands on deck” approach. Staff support one another across programs and events, including major organizational efforts such as Earth Day celebrations, educational programming, advocacy campaigns, and fundraising initiatives.

Hiring range: $55,000 - $65,000 DOE

MSBEC will pay all employment taxes and benefits, including sick leave as required by law.

Paid Time Off (PTO) is extended to full & part time employees and is an accrual policy.
