Human Resources Assistant Director

Job Title: Assistant Human Resources Director Status: Full Time Exemption Status: Exempt Salary Grade: 31 Department/Location: Human Resources Department, Diocese of Tucson Bishop Kicanas Pastoral Center, Tucson, AZ Primary Function Under the direction of the Director of Human Resources, the Assistant Human Resources Director is responsible for providing advice and counsel on human resource-related matters to management at the Diocese of Tucson Pastoral Center, parishes, schools, and other organizations serving the Catholic faithful within the Diocese of Tucson. This includes support in staffing, training, employee relations, payroll, administration of benefits, and management of HR personnel as assigned. The Employee is required to act as a minister of the Gospel and uphold Catholic behaviorally while at work and in personal life. Responsibilities Perform in support of the Church and the diocese’s spiritual and pastoral mission. Abide by Catholic principles in professional and private life, adhering strictly to Catholic morals and principles. Act as both a spiritual and administrative leader of the DOT HR Department. Assist the Director in developing, coordinating, facilitating, managing, organizing, implementing, and performing human resources administration activities including certifications, leaves, benefits, and payroll within the framework of Catholic Doctrine. Show initiative in fulfilling responsibilities; proactively monitor compliance with employment laws and diocesan personnel policies. Set an example for employees by personal adherence to and compliance with personnel policies and procedures. Maintain a working knowledge of relevant laws and regulations and engage in continuous professional education. Manage assigned HR department personnel in accordance with applicable employment laws and diocesan policies. Carry out all responsibilities with empathy, patience, and prudent judgment in the application and interpretation of diocesan personnel policies. Foster communication and work collaboratively with all diocesan personnel; treat all with professional courtesy that reflects positively on the Diocese. Perform other duties as assigned. Physical/Mental Requirements Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal office environment. Required Activities: Walking, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, talking, handling, hearing, carrying, and keyboarding. Basic Qualifications Working knowledge of the Catholic Church’s mission of fostering lay leadership. Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal, public speaking, and presentation. Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills; self‑starter, well‑organized, team player. Ability to travel, and be available for evening and weekend work as necessary; reliable transportation. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Proficiency in computer technology, word processing, Excel, and related applications. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personnel information. Flexibility in assessing needs and adapting strategies in a ministerial environment. Successful completion of a criminal history and background check. Professional bearing and clean, neat personal appearance. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or Public Administration from an accredited institution. Minimum five years of management experience with demonstrated success. Five years as a practicing human resource professional. Other Preferred Skills and Abilities Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or Public Administration from an accredited institution (preferred). Proficiency in Spanish.
