Lower School Learning Specialist Brentwood School, a vibrant and diverse K-12 independent school, is looking for a full-time Lower School Learning Specialist starting July 1, 2026. The Lower School Learning Specialist reports to the Lower School Director and qualified candidates should have a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in psychology or educational psychology and a minimum of three years of experience. The Lower School Learning Specialist is responsible for assessing learning needs, developing individualized strategies, and implementing interventions and programs that promote academic and personal success. This role involves working closely with students, teachers, and families to create inclusive and effective learning environments. Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Students Create, implement and update Individual Learning Plans for students who meet Brentwood’s eligibility requirements for school-based accommodations Serve as a case manager for students with Learning Plans including writing, updating and ensuring proper implementation of accommodations Collect and assess student data including reading assessments and MAP testing Maintain a data monitoring system to track students’ reading data Maintain accurate records of student progress and interventions and monitor student progress Provide one‑on‑one and small group academic support for students Identify learning styles of individual students based on: meetings, observations, teacher meetings, parent conversations, conversations with outside resource providers and neuropsychological evaluations Parents and Families Provide professional referrals for neuropsychological testing and/or outside professional support when required Interpret neuropsychological evaluations to families as needed Coordinate, facilitate and document Feedback Meetings Demystify learning differences to parents Collect data and provide parents with updates on students' progress and strategies for supporting their learning at home Coordinate homework helpers for students Faculty Review outside testing, summarize, and share strategies with faculty that parallel the classroom curriculum Interpret neuropsychological evaluations to faculty, as needed Distribute current/new accommodations to teachers and assist them in implementing recommendations Collaborate with and coach teachers on effective teaching strategies and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learner Provide classroom support to teachers, including co‑teaching and modeling effective instructional strategies and supporting use of necessary student accommodations. Lead child study meetings to create, implement and monitor intervention plans and learning plans Plan and present professional development on neurodiversity, inclusive teaching strategies, and workshops focused on literacy, including (among others), Independent Reading, Classroom Libraries, Conferring, and Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment Toolkit Provide coaching on managing learning challenges such as ADHD, dyslexia, or executive functioning difficulties Participate in parent conferences as needed in order to support the relationship with the classroom teacher (help parents to better understand how student's needs impact learning and to highlight teacher support) Work as the liaison between school, families, and any additional services General Attend all Student Support meetings and follow up on discussions and/or specific implementation strategies Collaborate with teachers, parents, outside providers, counselor, and other school staff to identify and assess students' learning needs and develop individualized learning plans Interface with outside support professionals – educational evaluators, educational therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language personnel, etc. Attend and participate in all faculty and team meetings, parent‑teacher conferences as needed, grade level parent coffees, and other school events Stay up‑to‑date on brain‑based research and best practices in teaching neurotypical and neurodiverse learners, and collaborate with colleagues to implement effective instruction, strategies and interventions Engage in professional and personal development Read and edit report cards of students with learning plans Support with developing the literacy curriculum in all grades K‑5 including building Monitor and replenish classroom libraries Coordinate annual speech screenings Additional duties as needed including lunch and carpool duty Serve as a member of the Lower School administrative team Other duties as assigned by the Director, Lower School or the Senior Administrative Team Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree, Board Certified Educational Therapist (BCET), Educational Therapist/Professional (ET/P) through the Association of Educational Therapists (AET), valid teaching credential (mild/moderate disabilities), or related experience Minimum of three years of experience as a learning specialist, or supporting students with diagnosed learning differences Strong understanding of evidence‑based instructional practices and strategies that promote student organization, independence, and academic success Experience and expertise in reading and synthesizing neuropsychological evaluations, Section 504 plans, and/or Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) While being vaccinated for COVID-19 is not required, it is strongly recommended. COMPENSATION: Brentwood School’s diverse and talented faculty ranges widely in experience level, from those new to teaching to veterans who are experts in their respective disciplines with 30+ years of experience. Our salary range, of $93,000 - $133,000, includes all levels of experience. Salaries are determined based on years of experience, education, full‑or‑part‑time status, and number of months worked per school year. Salary ranges do not include benefits i.e. 403b retirement matching, paid lunchtime, free breakfast and lunch, free parking, subsidy toward medical, dental, vision, life/AD&D plans, and generous time off. The pay range is an estimate and is not guaranteed.
