Job Title: Manual Machinist Job Description

This role independently produces precision metal parts using manual lathes and mills, requiring a higher level of technical skill and experience than an entry-level manual machinist and incorporating emerging leadership and training responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate manual machining equipment, including lathes and mills, to produce precision metal components.
  • Select, install, and change tooling to meet job specifications and optimize machining performance.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions to determine machining requirements.
  • Measure and inspect parts using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators to verify accuracy and ensure tolerances are met.
  • Complete required quality and production documentation, including inspection reports and job travelers, in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Monitor machine fluids and perform basic machine maintenance to ensure reliable and efficient operation.
  • Troubleshoot minor equipment issues and make adjustments to improve part quality and machining efficiency.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop standards and safety procedures.
  • Operate forklifts safely as needed to move materials or components within the shop.
  • Adhere to all personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements and safety standards while performing machining operations.
  • Support the training and mentoring of new or entry-level machinists by sharing knowledge, demonstrating proper techniques, and reinforcing best practices.
  • Collaborate with other machinists, engineers, and supervisors in a team-based environment to meet production goals and continuously improve processes.
Essential Skills
  • 3+ years of experience working in a manual machinist role.
  • 3–5 years of experience operating manual machine tools, including lathes and mills, in a manufacturing or job shop environment.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and detailed work instructions.
  • Demonstrated capability to independently set up and operate manual machines, including selecting and installing appropriate tooling.
  • Hands-on experience with precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators to verify part accuracy and tolerances.
  • Familiarity with machining a variety of materials, including steels, aluminum, and other metals.
  • Exposure to quality control processes and documentation, including completing inspection reports or job travelers.
  • Experience performing basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting minor equipment issues.
  • Background working in team-based manufacturing environments and collaborating with machinists, engineers, or supervisors.
  • Ability to safely operate a forklift in a machine shop setting.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and practical troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficiency in manual machining and machine operation, including the use of lathes, mills, drill presses, and shears.
  • Ability to interpret and apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) in machining operations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience assisting with training or mentoring entry-level machinists or trainees.
  • Familiarity with CNC machines and programming concepts, even if primary focus is manual machining.
  • Experience using drill presses, shears, and other supporting shop equipment.
  • Comfort working with both manual and CNC-related processes to support broader shop operations.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precision parts.
  • Ability to contribute to continuous improvement efforts focused on part quality and machining efficiency.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating within a team-based manufacturing environment.
