Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer (Mechanical, Fastening & Torque)

Job Description

The Mechanical, Fastening & Torque Engineer will provide technical engineering support for mechanical assembly processes, fastening systems, torque applications, and manufacturing equipment. This engineer will focus on improving fastening reliability, joint integrity, assembly quality, and manufacturing performance.

Responsibilities

• Develop and validate torque specifications.

• Support mechanical assembly processes.

• Troubleshoot fastening and torque-related failures.

• Implement industrial and automated torque solutions.

• Partner with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Production, Test Engineering, and Design Engineering to resolve manufacturing issues and improve assembly processes.

• Support large-scale mechanical assemblies, frames, enclosures, brackets, structural components, and industrial equipment.

• Review mechanical drawings, GD&T, assembly specifications, and engineering documentation.

• Evaluate designs for manufacturability and assembly.

• Support mechanical assembly process development, equipment installation, and NPI.

• Troubleshoot fitment, alignment, fastening, and mechanical assembly defects.

• Evaluate and select bolts, screws, nuts, washers, studs, threaded inserts, and other fastening methods.

• Develop and validate fastening and torque specifications.

• Evaluate bolt preload, clamp load, thread engagement, friction, joint stiffness, and fastening reliability.

• Troubleshoot stripped threads, cross-threading, loosening, fastener fracture, over-torque, under-torque, and insufficient clamp load.

• Conduct torque validation and joint-characterization studies.

• Support industrial electric, pneumatic, smart, and automated torque equipment.

• Configure or support torque controllers, tightening programs, sequences, and process limits.

• Support fastening traceability, tool calibration, process capability, MSA, work instructions, PFMEAs, Control Plans, procedures, and process documentation.

• Support root-cause investigations and corrective actions.

Essential Skills

• Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or closely related engineering discipline.

• 4+ years of engineering experience supporting mechanical assembly, fastening systems, torque applications, or industrial manufacturing.

• Hands-on experience developing, calculating, or validating torque specifications and understanding torque, bolt preload, clamp force, friction, and joint integrity.

• Experience troubleshooting fastener, threaded joint, mechanical assembly, or torque-related failures and driving root-cause/corrective actions.

• Hands-on experience with industrial torque tools or automated fastening equipment, including electric, pneumatic, or smart torque systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Strong understanding of threaded fasteners and mechanical joint behavior.

• Knowledge of fastener grades, materials, coatings, lubrication, corrosion protection, and friction.

• Understanding of torque-controlled and torque-angle fastening strategies.

• Experience interpreting mechanical drawings, GD&T, and manufacturing specifications.

• Knowledge of tolerance stack-up and mechanical assembly principles.

• Experience with manufacturing process improvement and root-cause analysis.

• Familiarity with ISO, SAE, or related fastening standards.

• Strong hands-on troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, production, quality, and manufacturing teams.

Work Environment

This role operates within an active manufacturing environment, providing hands-on support of production and mechanical assembly operations. Regular interaction with manufacturing equipment and industrial torque systems is expected. The position involves a combination of engineering analysis, process development, troubleshooting, validation, and floor support, in collaboration with Manufacturing, Quality, Production, Test, and Design Engineering teams.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Memphis, TN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $57.59 - $103.70/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
