Mental Health Counselor/ Social Worker Research Associate

Job Summary The Mental Health Counselor/ Social Worker Research Associate within the School of Public Health will report directly to the Principal Investigator within the Hassenfeld Institute. This part‑time position (up to 15 hours per week) works on the Mood Check school screening project, traveling to schools in Rhode Island and Massachusetts to conduct educational sessions with students, follow‑up assessments with adolescents who report symptoms of depression, and connect with caregivers and school personnel to provide feedback regarding depression risk. The Mood Check clinicians provide brief interaction during the screening only; no full counseling services are offered. During the academic year (Oct–May) the role involves frequent travel and evening phone call coverage. In the summer months (June–Sept) the focus shifts to research studies with no travel. The position is hybrid and requires independent travel up to four days per week within 1.25 hours of Providence. Key Responsibilities Conduct research screening and clinical assessments, including follow‑up and motivational interviews, in English and Spanish. Perform comprehensive mental‑health screenings and assessments in school or research settings, documenting findings in REDCap. Engage students, families, and school personnel in Spanish‑speaking communities, ensuring culturally and linguistically appropriate interactions. Provide periodic evening clinical coverage for the study team as needed. Serve as a linguistic bridge between the research team and Spanish‑speaking community stakeholders to support participant retention and referral processes. Maintain accurate documentation of clinical observations and assessment findings within study timelines. Adhere to research protocols, study and program deliverables, and institutional regulations. Travel independently, maintain valid driver’s licence, and operate a reliable vehicle for site visits up to four times per week. Qualifications Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field. 2–5 years of clinical experience working with children and adolescents in school or clinical settings. Current independent licensure as a mental‑health counselor (LMHC) and/or clinical social worker (LCSW) in Rhode Island; willingness to obtain Massachusetts licensure if requested. Proficiency in Spanish and English, with demonstrated ability to conduct interviews and documentation in both languages. Experience with REDCap or similar HIPAA‑ and FERPA‑compliant web‑based databases. Valid driver’s licence and reliable vehicle for travel requirements. Capacity to work up to 15 hours per week with travel and evening availability as described. Required Competencies Ability to engage professionally with students and families in Spanish‑speaking educational environments. Competency in documenting clinical observations and assessment findings in English based on Spanish‑language interviews. Skill in conducting outreach and follow‑up calls in Spanish to engage families in the screening and referral process. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, under tight deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills, including development and maintenance of relationships with diverse partners. High technical clinical skill set and the ability to write and report analyses from clinical data. Self‑motivated, critical thinker with problem‑solving aptitude. Exceptional time‑management skills and ability to work independently. Other Details The position is a fixed‑term appointment ending 31 March 2027, subject to extension based on funding.
