Paramedic - Emergency Department
Mayo Clinic
Job Description Emergency Department Paramedics play an integral role in the ongoing care of patients throughout their emergency visit. As a member of the ED care team, you'll collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality emergency care, support patient throughput, and contribute to seamless patient experiences from arrival through discharge. As part of our team, you'll receive a robust benefits package that supports your personal and professional well-being, including health insurance options, a 403(b) retirement plan with employer match, a pension plan, and Paid Time Off. Eligible candidates may also receive up to $10,000 in relocation assistance. • Under general supervision, the Paramedic assists Emergency Department staff with delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care which supports and compliments nursing practice.
• The Paramedic initiates and provides care within the scope of practice as defined by law.
• Provides patient care to a wide range of emergency conditions and to all patient populations including pediatric, adult, and geriatric.
• Works to the full scope of a paramedic to include intubation, medication administration, bedside procedures.
• Works as part of a collaborative care team with nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, and technicians rather than as a small independent ambulance crew.
• Focuses on continuous monitoring and reassessment of patients throughout their ED stay, not just during transport.
• Performs delegated patient care activities that support and complement nursing practice within the ED care model.
• Manages multiple patients simultaneously instead of caring for one patient during a single transport event.
• Assists with patient throughput by supporting triage, obtaining EKGs, IV access, medication administration, and diagnostic testing.
• Provides care in a highly structured environment with immediate access to physicians, advanced imaging, laboratory services, and specialty resources.
• Contributes to department flow and operational efficiency, helping reduce delays, boarding impacts, and diversion pressures.
• Documents care within the electronic medical record and participates in the ongoing plan of care throughout the patient's ED visit.
• Develops expertise in hospital workflows, patient handoffs, interdisciplinary communication, and quality measures.
• Balances emergency response skills with broader patient care responsibilities, including monitoring, reassessment, patient education reinforcement, and discharge support Qualifications • Registered with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and must maintain active registration status.
• Must have and maintain a State of Wisconsin Paramedic License.
• Must have current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
• 2 years' experience providing care for emergency patients in pre-hospital or hospital environment.
• Must demonstrate knowledge and ability to work in a mass casualty event.
• Proficient use of technical office equipment including computer for word processing/spreadsheet/database/e-mail/electronic calendars and other medical applications and/or other job specific office technology.
• Able to act decisively and calmly in a crisis situation. About Us Why Mayo Clinic Mayo Clinic is top-ranked in more specialties than any other care provider according to U.S. News & World Report.
