The Shop Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of oilfield equipment and light-duty fleet vehicles in a shop environment. This role supports field operations by restoring equipment to safe, reliable working condition and preparing it for redeployment to field locations. The Shop Mechanic works on a variety of mechanical systems, including pumps, transmissions, diesel engines, and other drilling and production equipment.
The ideal candidate has strong mechanical troubleshooting skills, experience working on oilfield equipment, and a commitment to safety, quality, and efficient equipment turnaround. Key Responsibilities- Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain oilfield drilling and production equipment brought into the shop from field locations.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on mechanical equipment, including pumps, transmissions, diesel engines, gearboxes, compressors, and other support equipment.
- Repair and maintain light-duty fleet vehicles and company service trucks.
- Disassemble, inspect, repair, rebuild, and reassemble mechanical components in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company procedures.
- Assist with loading, unloading, and securing equipment for transport to and from field locations.
- Perform functional testing to verify equipment is operating safely and efficiently prior to returning it to service.
- Identify worn or damaged components and recommend repair or replacement as necessary.
- Complete work orders, maintenance records, and inspection documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Maintain shop tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
- Coordinate with field personnel to prioritize repairs and minimize equipment downtime.
- Assist with inventory management by identifying replacement parts and shop supply needs.
- Follow all company safety policies, environmental procedures, and standard operating practices.
- Participate in safety meetings, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 8+ years of mechanical repair experience, preferably in the oil and gas industry.
- Experience repairing and maintaining drilling, production, or oilfield support equipment.
- Experience servicing light-duty trucks; ASE certification is an asset but not required.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, pumps, transmissions, and mechanical drive systems.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical failures and determine effective repair solutions.
- Experience using hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, repair procedures, and technical documentation.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Commitment to safe work practices and quality workmanship.
- Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced shop environment.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
- Dependable and reliable with a strong work ethic.
- Oil and gas, drilling, or production equipment maintenance experience.
- Experience with diesel engine diagnostics and repair.
- ASE certification (preferred but not required).
- Forklift and overhead crane operation experience.
- PEC Safeland certification or the ability to obtain it.
- H₂S Awareness or H₂S Alive certification, or the ability to obtain it.
- Full-time position based in the shop, with occasional support at field locations as needed.
- Standard schedule is Monday through Friday; overtime or weekend work may be required based on operational demands.
- Work is performed in an industrial shop environment with exposure to mechanical equipment, heavy lifting, and varying temperatures.
- Must be able to meet all company safety and site-specific training requirements.
