Teacher, English Learner (EL)/ Part Time (20 hrs per week) (26-27 SY) General Definition of Work The English Learner (EL) Teacher, under moderate supervision, performs instructional work with limited decision-making discretion, providing leadership in an educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. The teacher supervises, monitors, and evaluates students while developing lesson plans to ensure all student needs are met. The EL Teacher also serves as the EL leader for implementing the school-wide Language Instruction Educational Plan (LIEP) for all identified English Learners at the respective school. Employee performs school‑based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal. Essential Functions Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures. Adhere to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards. Assist school administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct. Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure. Maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students. Plan and implement an EL program of study that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students. Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods. Create a classroom environment that provides for student engagement in the learning process and enables students to achieve learning objectives. Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, communicating these objectives to students. Establish learning objectives based on student needs, the requirements of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), the Standard Course of Study, and the district curriculum framework. Prepare for assigned classes and provide written evidence of preparation upon request. Diagnose students’ learning challenges regularly, seeking assistance from central office staff as required. Maintain accurate records for IEPs and 504 Plans. Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency. Establish and maintain school‑based LIEPs, scheduling instructional services for ELs. Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities. Encourage students to explore learning opportunities and persevere through challenges. Use appropriate techniques and strategies that promote critical, creative, and evaluative thinking skills. Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to assess student progress. Assign and grade classwork and homework. Act as test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program and fulfill related requirements. Observe and assess students’ performance, behavior, social development, and physical health regularly. Meet with parents/guardians to discuss student progress, determine priorities and resource needs, and encourage parent involvement. Foster strong school‑home relations and facilitate communication between the EL classroom and home. Prepare and implement enrichment programs and remediation. Attend Professional Learning Community (PLC) and staff meetings for data analysis and instructional planning; assist other staff in understanding EL policy and procedures through training. Participate in professional development focused on acquiring and improving skills and knowledge. Perform safety functions and drills to maintain a safe instructional environment; take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities. Perform related work as assigned or required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum principles, standards, and expectations in the assigned area. Comprehensive knowledge of how to utilize appropriate data to make instructional decisions. Demonstrated knowledge of learning styles, curriculum development, program evaluation, effective instruction, classroom management, learning assessment, and research related to learning. Skilled in verbal and written communication. Skilled in computers and software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to instructional practice. Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily operations. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings. Ability to problem‑solve using sound judgment. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business. Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline‑driven, rapidly changing team environment. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree required. Valid NC Teaching certification or eligibility for NC Teaching certification in the assigned area. Equivalent combination of education and experience. Salary/Status: Certified Schedule/Full‑time, 10 months Reports To: Principal Place of Work: The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Schools.
