Project Manager - Commercial Furniture

MalaceHR is seeking an experienced Project Manager – Commercial Furniture to support an increased project workload through the end of the year. This is an initial three-month contract with the potential for extension depending on business needs.
This role is focused heavily on the project management, procurement, coordination, and installation of commercial furniture . The ideal candidate will have direct experience managing furniture projects in corporate, commercial real estate, architectural/design, or furniture dealership environments.
Candidates must have commercial furniture experience; residential furniture experience alone will not qualify . Previous experience as a furniture project manager, furniture dealer representative, or owner's representative is highly preferred.
This is not a fully remote position. Candidates should be located within the Washington, DC metropolitan area and be available to work from the DC office approximately 2–3 days per week, or as project needs require. Travel to client sites will also be required. Additional project-related travel expenses, including airfare, hotel, and meals, will be reimbursed as applicable.
Project installations may occasionally require work outside normal business hours or earlier start times.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently manage commercial furniture projects of up to approximately 50,000 RSF while supporting larger-scale projects as needed.
- Lead furniture projects from initial planning and specification through procurement, delivery, installation, and closeout.
- Develop detailed furniture Scopes of Work (SOWs) , procurement packages, project plans, schedules, and budgets.
- Coordinate closely with clients, architects, project managers, construction teams, furniture dealers, vendors, designers, and other project stakeholders.
- Review furniture plans, specifications, technical documentation, and final dealer design packages for completeness and accuracy.
- Review and validate furniture Bills of Materials (BOMs) prior to procurement.
- Manage furniture procurement activities, including vendor coordination, pricing, order entry, purchasing, and tracking.
- Coordinate furniture delivery and installation activities with overall construction and project schedules.
- Maintain furniture open-item logs, project trackers, schedules, budgets, and other required documentation.
- Monitor project costs and schedules to ensure furniture scope is delivered within established budget and timeline requirements.
- Identify project risks, delays, specification issues, or installation challenges and develop appropriate solutions.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for client questions and concerns related to furniture projects.
- Facilitate project meetings and communicate project status, outstanding items, schedule changes, and action items to stakeholders.
- Coordinate relocation activities, move planning, communications, and change-management efforts when applicable.
- Ensure furniture specifications and installations meet project requirements, industry standards, and client expectations.
- Perform site visits before, during, and after installation to verify conditions and ensure successful project execution.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Project Management, Construction Management, Interior Design, Architecture, Communications, or a related field preferred.
- 3–5 years of experience managing commercial furniture projects .
- Direct experience within a commercial furniture dealership, corporate real estate organization, architectural/design firm, project management firm, or owner's representative environment.
- Strong understanding of commercial furniture systems, specifications, finishes, technical requirements, procurement, and installation processes.
- Ability to review architectural drawings, furniture plans, specifications, and space plans.
- Experience developing and reviewing furniture SOWs, procurement packages, Bills of Materials, and project documentation.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines, vendors, and stakeholders simultaneously.
- Proven ability to manage project budgets and schedules.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and client-facing skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to address field and installation challenges quickly.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite , including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability to travel to client sites throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area as required.
- Flexibility to support furniture installations outside normal business hours when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Furniture Project Manager, Furniture Manager, Furniture Dealer Project Manager, or Owner's Representative .
- Experience managing furniture projects within corporate office, commercial real estate, or workplace environments.
- Project Management Professional ( PMP ) certification.
- NCIDQ certification.
- Experience with AutoCAD, CET, or similar furniture/design software.
- Understanding of commercial construction processes and how furniture installation integrates with construction schedules.
- Experience managing large-scale workplace relocations, renovations, or furniture installation projects.
