Mobile Optical Lab Technician

Position Purpose

The Mobile Optical Lab Technician will be responsible for assisting with the operations of the Youth Vision Program activities in the Tampa Bay area on behalf of Lions World Vision Institute. The program provides services in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties. Youth Vision Program activities include vision screening, glasses fittings, and/or refraction eye exam clinics at schools, community events or other designated locations.

The Mobile Optical Lab Technician is responsible for operating and maintaining the Mobile Optical Lab vehicle while providing optical lab services, including eyewear preparation, lens edging, and final inspections. This role ensures high-quality optical services while also safely transporting and maintaining the mobile unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Vehicle Operations and Maintenance:

• Drive, park, and maintain the Mobile Optical Lab vehicle (40 ft. customized RV) for safe and efficient operation.
\n
• Perform routine inspections, basic maintenance, and troubleshooting for the vehicle and onboard optical lab equipment.
\n
• Ensure compliance with vehicle safety regulations, fuel management, and maintenance logs.
\n

Optical Lab Responsibilities:

\n
• Perform lens edging, neutralization, frame adjustments, and final eyewear inspections to ensure quality and accuracy.
\n
• Support frame selection, vision screenings, and optical measurements at service locations.
\n
• Maintain optical lab equipment and supply inventory, including ordering and restocking as needed.
\n
• Ensure all eyewear production and dispensing meet quality standards for accuracy and prescription compliance.
\n

Community Engagement & Service Delivery:

\n
• Assist with vision screenings and eyewear dispensing at schools, community centers, and outreach events.
\n
• Provide excellent patient service in a non-sales environment, ensuring individuals receive the vision care they need.
\n
• Work closely with program staff and volunteers to support efficient clinic operations.
\n

Required:

\n
• Minimum of 2 years of optical lab experience (lens edging, frame adjustments, neutralization, etc.).
\n
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot minor technical issues with optical lab equipment and the vehicle.
\n
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (CDL not required) and reliable transportation to work.
\n
• Ability to safely drive, park, and maintain a large vehicle (training provided).
\n
• Willingness to undergo a Level II background check and drug test.
\n
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs for transporting supplies and equipment.
\n

Preferred:

\n
• Florida Optician License (preferred but not required).
\n
• Experience in mobile or community-based healthcare settings.
\n
• Familiarity with vision screening equipment and optical tools.
\n
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
\n

Work Environment

The work environment described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to an office-like-environment. The noise level is usually low.

Equipment required for this position includes but are not limited to, standard office space and equipment, standard PC equipment and printers and telephone.
