Respiratory Therapist - Per Diem

Hourly Pay Range: $33.16 - $49.74 (determined by expertise and years of experience, among other factors) Locations Northwest Community Hospital – Arlington Heights, IL Evanston Hospital – Evanston, IL Edward Hospital – Naperville, IL Elmhurst Hospital – Elmhurst, IL Glenbrook Hospital – Northbrook, IL Highland Park Hospital – Highland Park, IL Skokie Hospital – Skokie, IL Swedish Hospital – Chicago, IL Schedule Per Diem schedule is flexible as needed, primarily 12‑hour shifts; Night shift, 7pm – 7:30am. What you will do Report to the Manager of Respiratory Care; perform, teach, and guide all forms of respiratory therapy, chest physical therapy, and cardiopulmonary diagnostics. Assess and treat all age groups from neonatal to geriatric, implementing treatments based on developmental stages. Involve family/guardian in the plan of care and conduct patient family education as appropriate. Administer all forms of respiratory therapy, including medical gases, medication delivery via airways, chest physical therapy, pressure breathing treatments, breathing retraining, aerosol, and humidity therapy. Understand equipment, indications, contraindications, hazards, and adverse reactions of each therapy mode. Provide intensive respiratory care utilizing advanced techniques; establish and maintain an airway during CPR and perform external cardiac massage if necessary. Perform arterial punctures for blood gas samples, analyze blood gases, and perform related calculations; oversee blood gas lab quality control. Conduct pulmonary function testing (spirometry, lung volume, DLCO) and perform related calculations and quality control. Explain the purpose and procedure of treatments, tests, and equipment to patients, families, and hospital personnel; develop and deliver home care instructions. Participate in continuing education at all department levels. Perform patient assessment and evaluate care; consult with nurses and physicians to optimize patient care. Initiate and maintain appropriate records in patient charts and respiratory care records. Guide Respiratory Therapy Techs as necessary. Clean, repair, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment; uphold department appearance. Perform selected duties of the Director in absence, such as allocating staff assignments, granting overtime, accepting sick and absentee calls, authorizing equipment rental, and activating disaster plans. What you will need Education: Graduate of an AMA‑approved school for respiratory therapy granting eligibility to take exams by the National Board for Respiratory Care or be Registered or Certified by the N.B.R.C.; current Illinois Respiratory Care Practitioner licensure required. Certification: Current CPR certification. Experience: Advanced knowledge of acid‑base balance, blood gas analysis and interpretation, and cardiopulmonary physiology.
