Role Summary:

The Adjuster III investigates, evaluates, and adjusts assigned claims, which typically consist of medium to complex non-litigated and litigated general liability, third-party automobile bodily injury and property damage claims, and may include claims involving more specialized lines of business. This role independently selects and directs defense and coverage counsel and serves as a technical resource for less experienced adjusters on complex coverage, litigation, or reserving questions, as needed. Must be qualified legally and technically to handle all claims competently and be able to handle more complex, litigated claims.

Location & Work Arrangement:

Position is fully remote with preference for candidates in the Eastern time zone and familiar with and licensed for liability claims in the New England/Tri State area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The employee shall be asked to perform all of the following essential functions, and other duties as assigned.

Investigate Claims:

• Investigate, analyze, and determine the extent of liability concerning personal, casualty, or property loss or damages, including assessing and estimating vehicle or property damage.

• Correspond with, interview, and telephone the client's employees, claimants, witnesses, medical specialists, and agents to compile relevant facts and supporting business or managerial research.

• Obtain and evaluate client, customer, legal, and property records to determine whether evidence supports the claim.

• Gather physical evidence and inspect properties to determine damages, following applicable contract, property, and insurance law and evidentiary procedures.

• Obtain all necessary reports and documents to analyze and evaluate the loss or damages, and attempt to effect settlements with claimants when appropriate.

Evaluate Liability Exposure:

• Review insurance applications, contracts, and policies or memoranda of coverage to determine appropriate coverage.

• Obtain, review, and evaluate records — police, medical, and other supporting documentation — to recommend claim action.

• Establish, monitor, and adjust reserves as appropriate throughout the life of the claim.

Create & Maintain Records:

• Maintain records, reports, diaries, and files on the CMIS in accordance with the Company Procedure Manual and established Company and regulatory criteria.

• Document spoken and written case activity on the CMIS and prepare timely status reports for clients.

Litigation Management Support:

• Collect evidence to support contested claims in court.

• Select and manage defense and coverage counsel and experts; provide direction to defense counsel in managing litigated cases.

• Keep clients advised throughout the litigation process.

• Serve as a technical resource for less experienced adjusters on complex coverage, litigation, or reserving questions, as needed.

• Attend litigation hearings including settlement conferences and mediation as necessary.

  Education & Experience:

• Four-year college degree (preferred).

• Possess comprehensive knowledge relating to the handling of public entity liability claims.

• At least five (5) years’ experience with insurance claims, self-insurance, pooled insurance, or Joint Powers Authorities (JPAs), including at least two (2) years handling litigated claims.

• Prior experience using claims management software and/or ability to quickly learn new software systems related to claims management.

Certificates and Licenses:

• Appropriate jurisdictional adjuster license required where applicable to assigned jurisdictions.

Compensation:

Salary Range: $90,000 - $100,000 annually

The salary range listed is an estimate. Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors such as a candidate’s experience, qualifications, skill set, and work location. Position is eligible for AvonRisk’s full benefits package.
