Description City of Oakley is offering a hiring bonus of up to $10,000. Half of the bonus will be awarded upon completion of field training and the remaining half upon successful completion of probation. This position is an entry/journey level Police Officer responsible for the full scope of law‑enforcement duties under general supervision. Incumbents may hold limited experience but are expected to learn and perform a wide range of responsibilities with minimal supervision. Typical Qualifications Knowledge Of Operations and standard operating procedures of a Police Department. Pertain federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Modern methods, procedures, and techniques for law‑enforcement and crime prevention. Care and maintenance of firearms and other police equipment. Principles and practices of data collection and analysis. Report preparation and writing, including English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Identification, preservation, and presentation of evidence. Self‑defense techniques and proper use of force. Interviewing witnesses, victims, or suspects and investigative techniques. Public relations principles and local geography. Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Ability To Understand, interpret, and enforce applicable federal, state, and local policies. Explain law‑enforcement policies and procedures. Perform a wide range of law‑enforcement assignments independently. Collect, analyze, and evaluate facts and evidence and reach sound conclusions. Use and qualify for law‑enforcement tools and weapons. Operate specialized law‑enforcement equipment. Think clearly and act quickly in varying situations. Conduct investigations, interviews, and arrest operations. Accurately observe and remember details during incidents. Prepare clear and concise reports and communications. Interact effectively with the public and maintain good relations. Meet physical endurance and vision requirements. Work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and varied shifts. Follow oral and written directions and operate office equipment. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Education And Experience Guidelines Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and enrollment in or graduation from a P.O.S.T. approved police academy. College‑level coursework and an Associate’s Degree are highly desirable. Some work experience as a California peace officer or other work experience that demonstrates a general aptitude for police work. Licenses And Certificates Possession of a valid driver’s license is required. After the probationary period, qualification for a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate is required. Additional certifications may be required for specialized assignments. Physical Demands & Working Environment Reactive emergency, natural or man‑made disaster, and routine peace‑keeping environments with travel between sites. Exposure to outside weather, fumes, chemicals, extreme temperatures, and potential hostile environments. Extensive public contact and moderate to loud noise due to sirens and training. Workers are required to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends.
