The Shelter Coordinator reports to the Director of Basic Needs Programs. They provide direct supervision to the program Youth Coaches and collaborate with the Program Director to organize and coordinate overall programmatic activities in the St Albans Youth Shelter. This position works in coordination with the Chief Programs Officer, the Chief Clinical Officer, other agency directors, and appropriate staff. 

This is a full-time nonexempt position with a base wage of $29.33 per hour and shift differentials apply based hours worked. The schedule for this position will have some evening and weekends as well as helping with coverage needs for the program. Possible Schedule: Tuesday – Thursday 12:00 pm – 9:00 pm, Friday – 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Saturday 6:00 am – 10:00 am. 

Essential Functions  

• Coordinate day-to-day operations of the St Albans Youth Shelter. This program also provides basic mental health and substance abuse screening, self-sufficiency screening, life skills training and support, access to healthy activities, and referral to other services. 
• Provide direct supervision to program Youth Coaches and any temp staff working in the shelter.
  • Recruit, screen, and hire all new staff. 
  • Develop and provide program specific training for staff.
  • Onboard new staff and offboard leaving staff 
  • Provide agency and community resources orientation and training. 
  • Oversee and facilitate weekly/monthly schedules. 
  • Facilitate coordination with the Drop-In Team, as well as other inter-agency teams as needed.
  • Provide bi-weekly one-on-one supervision to Youth Coaches.
  • Oversee and facilitate weekly/monthly schedules
  • Provide supervision and observation during working hours to Youth Coaches.
  • Complete annual professional development reviews for each supervisee and utilize professional development plan through supervision.
  • Ensure that Youth Coach job responsibilities are being met, including documentation requirements, shared tasks, program policies. 
  • Assist youth in accessing affordable housing including submitting all necessary applications and working with community partners.
  • Assist youth in accessing health care and other benefits.
  • Assist youth in identifying and developing lifelong connections and support from caring adults.
  • Represent the program and the agency at inter-agency community meetings intended to improve service delivery and information distribution.
  • Maintain youth files and databases in an accurate and timely manner 

• Coordinate the intake process for youth:
  • Review Referrals that come in for youth seeking a shelter bed
  • Put referrals into Foothold and maintain the waitlist
  • Reach out to youth to screen them
  • Conduct shelter intakes with youth when a bed is available

• Administration duties:

• Participate in supervision and program development and implementation with Director of Basic Needs Programs drawing on evidence-based interventions with target population. 
• Develop, implement, and regularly re-evaluate program policy and procedures consistent with those of the Agency. 

• Develop and maintain all program records including logs, client records, and any other Agency documentation that may be required. 
• Ensure that grant deliverables are integrated into programming, data collection, and reporting 
• Develop and deliver community presentations related to the Shelter Program 
• Participate in other relevant meetings, such as team meetings and trainings, as needed and approved by the Program Director. 
• Provide On-Call services to all Basic Needs Programs on a scheduled rotation with other Basic Needs leadership.

Knowledge and skills Required  

• Commitment to the value of diversity with respect to gender, race, age, socio-economic level, sexual orientation, and religion.
• Bachelor's degree and relevant experience required. Master’s degree in social work or  another related human services field preferred.
• Three years’ experience in a relevant social service position and / or supervisory experience preferred. 
• Previous experience in providing client-centered, developmentally appropriate services to adolescents, young adults, and their families experiencing complex and varied mental health and substance use concerns. 
• Understanding of the complex impact of trauma and have experience of providing trauma-informed care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with evidence-based practices, such as: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. 
  • Crisis intervention skills, including suicide risk assessment, safety planning, and resourcing. 
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable transportation mandatory.
  • Knowledge of human development; with special attention to adolescent and young adult biopsychosocial development and family systems. 
  • Ability to provide leadership to staff engendering trust and teamwork while also setting limits and boundaries.

  • Ability to manage time and set priorities to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines
  • Ability to engage youth, building trust and rapport, and connecting to resources.

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) to relate to youth and the business community, helping professionals, government officials and community leaders clearly and effectively in a variety of ways and settings.
  • Knowledge of local and statewide services and resources. 
  • Ability to actively support diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts by participating in ongoing training and professional development.

Work Environment   

The above duties will be carried out in a variety of settings including on-site, street settings, various community meeting sites, and public gatherings. May require sitting, standing, general use of stairs, and lifting or moving up to 10 pounds.
