Job Summary

The CAD Mechanical Structural Designer supports the Engineering team and Engineering Manager by independently developing, reviewing, and delivering 3D models, engineering drawings, and equipment Bills of Materials (BOMs) in accordance with customer requirements, applicable industry standards, and established engineering procedures.

Job Description

• Create, develop, review, and check 2D drawings, 3D models, sketches, and equipment BOMs in accordance with customer requirements and engineering specifications.
• Prepare detailed engineering deliverables for mechanical, piping, and structural scopes of work for hyperscale data center modules and related facilities.
• Develop piping layouts, general arrangement drawings, piping isometrics, piping schedules, tie-point and interface drawings, and piping insulation details.
• Prepare structural general arrangements, weld details and notes, connection details, foundation support details, equipment mounting and support details, and pipe support drawings.
• Develop HVAC ducting layouts, instrumentation drawings, flow diagrams, Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and pump alignment drawings as required.
• Prepare detailed drawings for handrails, ladders, walkways, stairs, platforms, grating, and other structural components in accordance with applicable safety codes and standards, including OSHA requirements.
• Generate weight and center-of-gravity (COG) reports, manual valve lists, and other engineering documentation.
• Prepare bulk Material Take-Offs (MTOs) and detailed Bills of Materials (BOMs) independently, with minimal engineering supervision where qualified.
• Produce design sketches and visual representations to communicate technical concepts, proposed solutions, and design modifications.
• Support the completion of simple Engineering Work Requests in accordance with departmental work instructions and engineering standards.
• Support engineers, engineering management, and service personnel in troubleshooting technical problems through drawing reviews, model simulations, and design modifications.
• Identify, evaluate, and implement appropriate solutions to design challenges using technical knowledge, engineering experience, and factual analysis.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure mechanical, piping, structural, and related facility interfaces are properly integrated.
• Understand the purpose and basic operation of electrical systems within facilities to support effective coordination between disciplines.
• Communicate design information and technical requirements clearly to project teams, clients, vendors, and third-party engineering firms.
• Generate reports and extract relevant information from 3D models to support project execution, client deliverables, and engineering decisions.
• Ensure all drawings, models, BOMs, and engineering documents comply with customer specifications, applicable industry standards, and internal Engineering and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) requirements.
• Review and verify drawings for accuracy, consistency, completeness, constructability, and compliance with applicable design requirements.
• Review vendor drawings and technical documentation to confirm alignment with client specifications and relevant industry standards.
• Verify dimensional accuracy, equipment interfaces, material specifications, and design details before issuing deliverables.
• Follow all departmental work instructions, engineering standards, document control requirements, and established quality procedures.
• Identify design discrepancies and coordinate corrective actions with the appropriate engineering personnel.
• Coordinate and oversee outsourced engineering and design activities performed by third-party engineering or design firms.
• Review externally produced drawings and models for technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.
• Communicate design expectations, deliverable requirements, and revision comments to external design partners.
• Track design deliverables and support timely resolution of technical issues to meet project schedules and quality expectations.
• Support management objectives, engineering initiatives, and project delivery goals.
• Provide lessons-learned feedback and incorporate findings into engineering tools, procedures, templates, and standard work practices.
• Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, drawing quality, coordination, and the overall client experience.
• Manage multiple assignments and changing priorities while maintaining accuracy, productivity, and attention to detail.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Engineering Manager or management team.
• Deliver accurate, complete, and high-quality engineering drawings, models, BOMs, and MTOs.
  
• Meet customer requirements, project deadlines, and established engineering standards.
  
• Demonstrate independent technical problem-solving and sound design judgment.
  
• Maintain compliance with departmental work instructions and QA/QC requirements.
  
• Communicate effectively with engineering teams, clients, and external design partners.
  
• Contribute to continuous improvement and support the successful delivery of mechanical, piping, and structural design packages for modular and hyperscale facility projects.

S kills Required

• Technical certification in a relevant design discipline or a minimum of 10 years of relevant design experience.
• At least five years of experience in mechanical, piping, and structural design.
• Demonstrated proficiency in SolidWorks; this is a required skill.
• Experience producing and checking engineering drawings, 3D models, sketches, and technical documentation.
• Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software.
• Ability to interpret engineering specifications, technical drawings, customer requirements, and applicable design standards.
• General understanding of mechanical, piping, structural, and facility design principles.
• Understanding of the purpose and function of electrical systems in industrial or facility environments.
• Ability to prepare accurate BOMs, MTOs, and engineering deliverables.
• Fluency in written and spoken English.
• Required proficiency in 3D mechanical design, modeling, and drawing production.
• Software proficiency: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat, Foxit, or an equivalent application, 2D drafting, drawing production, and design documentation, Model review, coordination, and visualization.
• Previous experience designing equipment, modules, or infrastructure for data centers or hyperscale facilities.
• Experience with E-houses or modular electrical and equipment enclosures.
• Familiarity with high-density data center environments and multidisciplinary engineering interfaces.
• Experience coordinating mechanical, piping, structural, HVAC, and electrical interfaces within modular or industrial facilities.

Preferred Computer Skills

• SAP ERP, including engineering modules and transactions.
• Autodesk Revit.

• Additional CAD/BIM tools used for multidisciplinary design coordination.

Education

• Designer should be in possession of a Technical Certification in the design discipline or min 10 years experience.

Pay Rate

• $50 - $60 pe r hour (Compensation will be offered within this posted range based on experience, skills, and market factors)
