Town Attorney

Position Summary The Town Attorney serves as the chief legal advisor to the Mayor, Town Council, Town Manager, and Town departments, as well as various boards and commissions. The role supports Town operations by providing reliable, timely, and solutions-oriented legal guidance. Responsibilities Provide expert legal advice to elected officials and town staff Draft, review, and negotiate ordinances, contracts, and policy documents Represent the Town in legal proceedings Attend Council and advisory board meetings Maintain knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and court decisions affecting local governments Anticipate legal issues proactively and offer practical solutions Lead and mentor town legal staff, embodying the PEAK Principles of Performance, Empowerment, Accountability, and Knowledge Exercise independent judgment, initiative, discretion, and professionalism Uphold values of integrity and excellence in public service Qualifications Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited university Licensed and in good standing with the North Carolina State Bar, or eligible for comity licensure Substantial experience with municipal law, including land use, zoning, and labor law Sound judgment, ethical decision-making, and strong commitment to public service Excellent communication skills and ability to build relationships with diverse audiences Ability to provide balanced, constructive counsel in a straightforward manner Application Process Submit a cover letter, current resume, five professional references, and a writing sample (no AI assistance, 20 pages or fewer).
