Physical Therapist Job

The purpose of the position is to create, organize, conduct, and administer medically prescribed therapeutic treatment programs to restore body functions and to prevent disability following disease, injury, etc.

Work is performed in an inpatient and ambulatory health care setting. There is common exposure to infectious and communicable diseases, potentially hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials. The work may include a certain amount of exposure to hostile and/or emotionally disturbed patients, families, and visitors. Must be aware of all risks involved and be willing to take precautions as requested and required.

Work in the ambulatory health care setting requires considerable walking between exam and treatment rooms, and long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular and recurring bending, stooping, stretching, kneeling, and lifting of patients or similar activities.

Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:

1. Interpret physician orders. Performs patient evaluations. Assesses, physical performance of patient to determine extent of therapy needed, method of therapy, etc. Interprets the progress of patients.
2. Plans the method of treatment for patients. Modifies plan as needed.
3. Prepares various reports as needed to document progress.
4. Maintains patient records that include evaluation, treatment plan, therapy given, progress, etc.
5. Trains or assists in the training of students, new physical therapists, interns as needed.
6. Provide direct patient care through evaluation and treatment programs including instruction to patients and their families in specific physical therapy programs.
7. Plans and carries out physical therapy for general and surgical patients.
8. Teach exercises and movements to be performed by patients to prevent occurrence of deformities or to lessen impact of deformities.
9. Perform special tests to carry out complex procedures, determines kind and degree of muscle reactions to test and interprets results of tests.
10. Assess the level of patient care on a continuing basis and updates procedures as necessary.
11. Provide consultation and evaluation of physical therapy services to physician, nursing and other professional at the service unit using tact, good judgment and persuasiveness.
12. Delegate patient case loads to physical therapy assistants.
13. Keeps clear and accurate records on patients seen in accordance with established policy.
14. Regular attendance is required.
15. Maintains and cleans equipment used by department and demonstrates responsible and proper use of supplies.
16. Performs other duties as required.
