Job Title: Police Officer

Under the direction of the assigned administrator, the Police Officer protects public safety, health, and welfare and enforces federal, state, and local laws in interactions with the public.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrols a designated area to preserve law and order, provides crime prevention, and discovers crimes in progress.
  • Apprehends suspects.
  • Investigates crimes and traffic accidents by gathering evidence and interviewing victims and witnesses.
  • Writes reports, takes written victim and witness statements, and testifies in court.
  • Prepares, uses, and maintains assigned equipment, including patrol vehicles, radio equipment, firearms, and less-lethal weapons.
  • Assists the public, including providing first aid to injured or ill citizens.
  • Assists and cooperates with other public safety agencies.
  • When assigned as a K-9 officer, train, and maintain canine.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

High School diploma and work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, abilities, and skills. Previous law enforcement experience is highly desirable. Must be 21 years of age.

Licenses Required:

  • Valid, current driver's license and a good driving record.

Certifications and Testing Required:

  • Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic certificate or the ability to attain POST Basic certificate.

Work Environment:

  • This position works primarily in an outdoor environment.
  • Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Very Heavy Work: exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of workday), and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of workday), and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly (2/3 or more of workday) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Heavy Work.

The City of Barstow provides a generous benefit package as described in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City and Bargaining Unit 3 (Barstow Police Officers' Association):

Bilingual Services Pay:

  • Hired prior to July 1, 2011, eligible to receive a five percent (5%) increase over their base wage rate.
  • Hired after July 1, 2011, will be eligible to receive a $100 per month

Cafeteria Plan:

  • A monthly allowance based on the enrolled medical benefit coverage elected.
    • Employee Only: monthly allowance of $1200 per month
    • Employee plus 1: monthly allowance of $1500 per month
    • Employee plus family: monthly allowance of $2000 per month

Additional standard benefits include:

Holidays: Fifteen (15) days of holiday leave time each year plus an additional two (2) Winter Holidays

Longevity Pay: In recognition of years of service starting at three (3) years of service.

Post/Educational Incentive: 45 semester units or 68 quarterly units: $46 per month Associate of Arts/Science Degree or POST Intermediate Certificate: 5.0% increase over base wage rate Bachelor of Arts/Science Degree or POST Advance Certificate: 7.5% increase over base wage rate

Sick Leave: The city offers 4.0 hours of sick accrual each pay period.

Special Assignment Pay: Five percent (5%) increase over base wage rate for special assignments.

Tuition Reimbursement: $1,000 per fiscal year.

Uniform Allowance: Uniform allowance of $1500 per year. Newly hired Police Officer attending POST academy receive a one-time uniform allowance of up to $1500

Vacation: 122.2 hours of vacation or 4.70 hours per pay period for 1-4 years of service.
