Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Externship Overview An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Though each hospital is unique, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners. Responsibilities Gather patient histories Perform physical examinations Create treatment plans Carry out diagnostics Provide dentistry services Observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures Manage patients medically Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients Duration and Stipend Externship periods range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. Clinical students are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
