The clinical nurse coordinates and performs a variety of nursing care procedures for patients of all ages. This role requires professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments. The ability to work independently in completing assignments is essential. Clinical decisions are made independently during scheduled shifts. The nurse maintains complete accountability for all actions taken. Consultation with the appropriate manager or supervisor is required in difficult situations needing additional input or resources. The nurse must be able to react calmly and make sound nursing judgments in emergent situations. Accountability for proper delegation and supervision of nursing assistants and technicians is necessary. The nurse promotes high standards of excellence. Implementation of safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with multisystem disease and/or treatment complications is required. Setting priorities for care based on patient acuity and preferences is crucial. The nurse should anticipate potential problems and adapt to changes by prioritizing emergencies and fluctuations in patient status. Nursing procedures must be initiated, managed, and documented consistently with scientific principles and departmental policy. Accurate administration of age-specific medications and therapeutics is expected. The nurse carries out medical and nursing care plans while coordinating patient care activities with physicians and the healthcare team. Initiating actions to reduce, correct, or prevent risks to patients is part of the role. Facilitation of healing through individualized, goal-oriented nursing care is essential. Communicating tests, procedures, and disease processes to patients and their significant others is necessary. The nurse evaluates patient progress towards goals, directs new goal setting, and implements revised care plans as needed. Documentation of patient responses to care is required. Confidentiality of patient information must be assured at all times. Conducting thorough nursing assessments through interviews and observations is key. Identification of problems and nursing diagnoses based on the impact of health issues on patients and families is anticipated. The nurse should possess the ability to recognize the signs of deteriorating health conditions and act promptly. Educational knowledge is imparted to develop skills and enhance decision-making capabilities. Participation in educational programs and in-services is expected. Engagement in ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of patient teaching is necessary. The nurse must support the healthcare team's mission and provide input during meetings. Maintaining compliance with dress codes and annual competencies is required. The ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members is essential. Guidance and leadership skills to foster teamwork within the healthcare environment are desired. The nurse should actively participate in the orientation of new staff and travelers. Ensuring quality patient care despite the circumstances, whether routine or emergent, is important. The flexibility to perform duties as assigned while adhering to established policies and procedures is necessary. Participation in departmental staff meetings is expected, along with applying information presented in those meetings. Following corporate and hospital policies is required for the successful execution of nursing duties. The role entails a commitment to continuous learning and improvement in nursing practice.
