School Nurse

Reports To: Building Principal and Assistant Superintendent

Job Purpose: To provide regular and emergency medical services in consultation with the district physician, as well as services to students with moderate to severe medical impairments.

Qualifications-Required:

• NJ School Nurse Certification (Standard) or eligible for Emergency Certification with Matriculated Status in a School Nurse Program
• Bachelor's Degree
• NJ Registered Nurse License (Current)
• CPR & AED Certificates (Current)
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Able to maintain confidentiality of student records
• Able to interact positively with colleagues, students, administration, and parents
• Able to provide emergency medical services to students, when necessary
• Knowledge of the protocol to follow for addressing emergency medical services in a school setting
• Knowledge of the protocol for processing required documentation for the NJDOE and other agencies
• Knowledge of the protocol to follow for student immunizations and other required procedures
• Able to pass the Criminal History Review
• Able to pass Sexual Misconduct/Child Abuse Review

Qualifications-Desired:

• 2-3 years' experience as a school nurse
• 2-3 years' experience working with an elementary population
• Experience with School COVID-19 Protocols and Contact Tracing

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Conducts the affairs of the medical office under the direction of the Building Principal and Supervisor of Nursing.
• Assists the medical inspector with the examination of students.
• Keeps the records of the office as required by state code, statute, and board policies.
• Answers all emergency calls for medical assistance.
• Conducts daily inspections of children in time of an epidemic and contagious disease.
• Reports all cases of injury as per board policy.
• Administers medicine to students, only as directed by licensed physician.
• Maintains contacts with parents of students who become ill and/or injured.
• Observes the regulations and ethics of the medical profession concerning diagnosis.
• Teaches health and safety, when scheduled by the building principal.
• Completes all required state, local, and federal reports.
• Submits monthly reports to the appropriate administrators.
• Reviews the results of the health program and makes appropriate recommendations to the Principal and Supervisor.

• School Building Nurse's Office
• 10-Month Contract
• Salary range of $60,141 (BA, Step 1) to $104,512 (DOC, Step 13)

Physical Requirements:

• Able to perform the functions of a school nurse
• Able to go up/down stairs
• Able to bend at the waist, squat, kneel, etc. to examine and provide general/emergency medical services
• Able to lift at least 50 lbs
• Able to respond quickly to medical emergencies throughout the building and on campus grounds
• Able to push a wheelchair to transport an injured person
• Able to raise arms over head to reach for stored medicine in locked cabinets
