Hospitalist Nurse Practitioner

Job Summary The Hospital Medicine Nocturnist Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides comprehensive overnight inpatient care for adult hospitalized patients in collaboration with the supervising hospital medicine physician. Working independently within the scope of licensure and organizational privileges, the APP evaluates, diagnoses, and manages acute and chronic medical conditions, responds to changes in patient status, admits patients, and coordinates care with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, high-quality patient care during overnight hours. The Nocturnist APP serves as a key clinical resource for nursing staff and other healthcare professionals, helping to facilitate timely clinical decision-making, patient stabilization, and continuity of care throughout the night. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations for newly admitted and established hospitalized patients. Evaluate, diagnose, and manage acute medical conditions within the APP scope of practice. Admit patients from the Emergency Department or direct admissions, including completion of admission documentation and orders. Respond promptly to changes in patient condition, nursing concerns, rapid clinical assessments, and urgent medical issues. Order, interpret, and act upon laboratory, radiology, and diagnostic testing. Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans. Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions consistent with state regulations and organizational policies. Perform procedures and clinical interventions as credentialed and privileged. Collaborate closely with the supervising physician regarding complex or unstable patients and to ensure patient care planning is aligned with physician treatment plan. Coordinate care with nursing, consultants, case management, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, and ancillary services. Document patient encounters accurately and efficiently in the electronic medical record. Participate in quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, and departmental meetings as appropriate. Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and discharge expectations when applicable. Maintain compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and professional practice guidelines. Ability to multitask and quickly prioritize tasks to ensure patients are appropriately evaluated and care team members are rapidly supported as needed. Education Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program OR Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program. Experience Required New graduates may be considered. Preferred One (1) to two (2) years of experience in hospital medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, critical care, or other acute care inpatient setting. Experience with inpatient admissions and management of acutely ill adult patients preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills. Ability to recognize and respond to acute changes in patient condition. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients in a fast-paced inpatient environment. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians and interdisciplinary teams. Proficiency with electronic medical records and computerized provider order entry (CPOE). Commitment to evidence-based practice, patient safety, and high-quality clinical care. Licensure/Certification Required Current Missouri Nurse Practitioner license OR current Missouri Physician Assistant license. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification within organizational requirements. Successful completion of all hospital and department credentialing and privileging requirements within 90 days of employment. Schedule Full-time overnight (nocturnist) position. 7 on 7 off schedule once onboarded Twelve-hour night shifts, including weekends and holidays as scheduled. Participates in departmental scheduling and coverage requirements.
