Staff Data Engineer

Abbott seeks a Staff Data Engineer in Madison to lead technical design and complex implementation of enterprise data products and capabilities. The role combines hands-on engineering with cross-functional stakeholder engagement, mentoring, and architectural leadership within the company's data platform.

Responsibilities

Own technical design and delivery for complex data products, pipelines, and integrations across assigned domain
Define data contracts and govern data products for lifecycle management, quality, and reuse across the organization
Work with business stakeholders to understand requirements and shape technical solutions
Provide code and design review, mentor engineers, and guide adoption of testing and observability practices
Diagnose production issues, optimize cost efficiency, and ensure compliance with security and privacy standards

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or Engineering
8+ years progressively responsible data engineering or closely related experience
Demonstrated ownership of technical design and hands-on delivery for complex data products and pipelines
Advanced SQL and Python proficiency with relational and dimensional data modeling
Experience designing data products for analytics, machine learning, and AI applications
Knowledge of HIPAA, CLIA, and protected health information handling requirements
Ability to mentor engineers and lead technical initiatives without formal authority
