Field Service Technician - Heavy Equipment

Position: Field Service Technician (Machine Division – MAC) Location: Waxahachie, Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth Region) Employment Type: Full Time Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 5:00 pm (overtime required as needed) Description Holt CAT, the largest Caterpillar dealer of heavy construction equipment in the United States, seeks an experienced Field Service Technician to conduct exceptional field service repairs on equipment such as dozers, backhoes, front‑end loaders, and excavators. The technician will diagnose and repair emissions, hydraulics, engines, transmissions, HVAC, and electrical systems using both electronic tools and manual equipment. The role requires a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, the ability to obtain a CDL Class B, and maintenance of a DOT medical card. Key Responsibilities Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair construction equipment using electronic and manual tools. Document all work orders accurately. Troubleshoot and diagnose Tier 4 emission systems and EGR systems. Adhere to all safety policies and company procedures. Perform intermediate repairs and troubleshooting off‑site with minimal supervision. Remove, install, disassemble, and assemble parts per CAT specifications. Test, adjust, and verify proper operation of all repairs. Prepare job‑related documents, write service reports, order parts, and maintain clear customer records. Act as a team leader, mentor, and coach to lower‑level technicians. Participate in quoting work orders. Operate equipment and vehicles with all required licenses and certificates. Maintain vehicle inspection records, daily inspections, and driver logs per DOT requirements. Adhere to contamination control and HAZMAT rules. Maintain all company equipment, tools, and vehicle in good, clean, working order. Communicate job progress to supervisors and customers as needed. Complete assigned jobs to meet flat‑rate time and re‑work standards. Work overtime as required by workload and customer needs. Complete all assigned Technician Training Path courses and safety training. Project professionalism, including personal appearance; mentor lower-level technicians. Maintain regular, punctual attendance. Perform other duties as assigned. Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Advanced troubleshooting of heavy construction equipment. Documentation of work orders. Proficiency with Tier 4 emission and EGR diagnostics. Fuel, electrical, and hydraulic system diagnostics. Knowledge of safe work procedures and practices. Understanding of equipment design, repair, and maintenance. Intermediate knowledge of hydraulics, transmissions, engines, undercarriage, and electrical. Computer proficiency with CAT ET, CAT SIS, and related hardware. Customer‑service skills. Diagnostic and troubleshooting skills – preferred CAT ET and CAT SIS experience. Planning, organizing, and time‑management skills. Operation and control of construction equipment and systems. Equipment selection and procurement skills. Communication skills, both verbal and written. Certification for crane and forklift operation. Ability to meet deadlines in fast‑paced environments. Proficiency with hand, power, pneumatic, and mechanical tools. Fine motor skills for small‑object manipulation. Education and Experience More than four years of heavy equipment experience required; six or more years preferred. Must use CAT ET and CAT SIS 2.0. MSHA certification preferred. Air‑conditioning certification preferred. Proficient troubleshooting of emission systems. Supervisory Responsibilities None Travel Travel required; possibility of overnight stays. Additional Requirements Valid driver’s license required. Ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an acceptable driving record. Ownership of required tools to perform repairs. Physical Requirements Move objects and use abdominal and lower‑back muscles for extended periods without fatigue. Frequently relocate materials or equipment weighing up to 80 lb. Constant limb movement; requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina. Ascend/descend ladders and equipment using both hands and feet. Maneuver safely and work underneath equipment. React promptly to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions; perform visual inspections. Work Environment Wearing common protective or safety equipment. Regular outdoor work around moving mechanical parts; noise levels may be loud. Exposure to weather extremes, heat, cold, and humidity. Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high‑pressure water, and high‑speed rotating equipment. Work in cramped spaces and/or high places.
