Supervisor, Tissue Recovery

General Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Manager, Tissue Recovery, while utilizing established parameters and healthcare knowledge and expertise, assists the Manager, Tissue Recovery in monitoring, evaluating, and improving all aspects of tissue recovery for transplant, research, and education, in accordance with internal SOP’s, processor SOP’s and/or technical service manuals and work instructions, AATB and FDA standards.

The Supervisor assesses, evaluates, and advises tissue recovery staff regarding potential tissue donors while working collaboratively with all necessary organizational team members, tissue AOC and third-party partners. The Tissue Recovery Supervisor provides guidance and on-going training to the Tissue Recovery Specialist 1’s, Tissue Recovery Specialist 2’s, Team Leaders and Team Leader 2’s in the communication of medical record, EMR, DRAI and physical assessment discrepancies proactively or prior to contacting the tissue AOC or tissue processor when available. The Tissue Recovery Supervisor will also provide informational and educational in-services to professional and public audiences at the discretion of the Manager or Director of Tissue Recovery. The Supervisor, Tissue Recovery will assist the Manager in the creation, on-going revision, coordination, and delivery of the department curriculum for Donation University. The Supervisor will coordinate and assist with Tissue Recovery Specialist 1 and Tissue Recovery Specialist 2 training to independence. In addition, the Supervisor will be involved with on-going competency training and attend organizational meetings representing the department at the Manager and/or Director’s discretion.

In conjunction with the Manager, Tissue Recovery, the Supervisor will participate in the resolution of all Level I and II non-conformances, after action review of cases, evaluation of processor rejections to determine if staff re-training is warranted and, adherence to best practice as it relates to tissue recovery.

This requires a minimum of six 12 hour on-call shifts per month, except for increased call shifts in the event of short staffing per the department scheduling guidelines. The Supervisor will provide a minimum of 16 hours of administrative time to meeting the needs of the department which could include assigned job duties, projects, assigned processor liaison responsibilities, pending donor activity and overtime.

Position requires travel to Infinite Legacy regional offices and hospitals (Maryland, DC and Northern, VA) within Infinite Legacy’s donor service area.

Education and Experience:

1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited University preferred. A professional license may be substituted in lieu of or in addition to pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
2. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in tissue recovery required with demonstrated knowledge in tissue screening and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
3. Current tissue banking specialist (CTBS) certification.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• At the request of Human Resources, participates in the screening and hiring process of new employees.
• In conjunction with the manager, is responsible for maintaining and updating the departmental performance management board and reporting these departmental projects/goals on a routine schedule as defined by organizational leadership.
• Assists the manager with verifying payroll for signoff on a bi-weekly basis per departmental protocol.
• Approves paid time-off (PTO) for full-time tissue recovery staff per departmental protocol while maintaining adequate staffing to meet clinical activity.

• Must be certified as a tissue banking specialist (CTBS) and maintain that certification in good standing.
• Must remain proficient in all regulatory and accrediting agency standards and policies.
• Ability to travel throughout Infinite Legacy’s Donor Services Area.

Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Assists the manager and the organizational scheduling committee(s) in the creation and approval of the monthly departmental on-call schedule while maintaining adequate coverage to meet the clinical and recovery needs of the department.
2. Maintains peer and leadership confidentiality in communications with team members.
3. Demonstrates the skills and ability to provide training, instruction, and presentations to internal and external partners. Advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, processor criteria of acceptance and clinical applications of recovered tissue is required.
4. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of dissection techniques including but not limited to specialty graft recoveries, e.g., OA, OC, AI.
5. Performs special tasks and completes projects as assigned by the Director, Manager, or the organizational leadership team.
6. Works with the Director, Manager and Quality Team to ensure compliance of FDA, AATB and other federal, state, and local regulations or guidelines.
7. In collaboration with the organizational education department, the supervisor will assist in the creation and delivery of Tissue Recovery Specialist I, Tissue Recovery Specialist 2, team leader and team leader II simulations and/or wet-lab trainings as defined by the Director and/or Manager. The supervisors will routinely interact with and advise the tissue recovery staff on TrainCaster compliance and will be responsible for team compliance and completion of departmental modules during annual competency week.
8. The supervisor(s) will participate in research studies, PDSA’s, performance improvement and data evaluation upon the request of organizational leadership which enhance or improve tissue recovery outcomes.
9. In collaboration with Quality Systems and POL, meets or exceeds the standards for first pass yield and chart completion timeframes on behalf of the department, CAPA resolution, supply management and adherence to rules/guidelines established for use of the bio-materials management system (BTM).
10. In conjunction with the Education department, manages the training efforts and training compliance timelines for the TR Department. This includes the development and implementation of department-specific training in conjunction with ancillary partners such as processors, vendors, funeral homes, OCME, transport companies, transplant centers and/or hospital partners.
11. Participates on regional and national committees as appropriate. Attends an AATB, EBAA, AOPO meeting or workshop at least once every year.
12. Keeps knowledge current through participation in NATCO, AOPO, AATB, EATB, etc.
13. On a rotating basis, serves as emergency contact for applicable departments, including sick calls and emergencies. During times of decreased staffing/emergency, may be required to fill schedule holes and/or timeframes necessary.
14. Participates as a member of the Leadership Team demonstrating Infinite Legacy core values and attending meetings such as team meetings, retreats, planning sessions, etc.
15. Serves as a tissue administrator on-call (TAOC) and meets minimum TAOC shift requirements and responsibilities.
16. Other duties as assigned.
