Director of Engineering - New Ventures

The Opportunity We are partnering with a healthcare venture-building organization that is creating new technology companies alongside one of the country’s leading healthcare institutions. The team works directly with clinicians, researchers, and healthcare operators to identify important problems, evaluate where AI can create a meaningful advantage, and test new business concepts through hands‑on technical investigation and prototyping. They are now hiring a Director of Applied AI, New Ventures to help turn early ideas into validated products and investable companies. This is not a traditional engineering management position. You will operate as a hands‑on technical venture builder, moving between product discovery, applied AI, prototyping, technical diligence, and early company creation. What You’ll Do Work directly with clinicians, researchers, and operational leaders to uncover meaningful healthcare problems and opportunities. Translate complex workflows and data into technically grounded product and venture concepts. Build wireframes, proofs of concept, and early AI‑powered prototypes to test the most important assumptions. Evaluate whether a concept is technically feasible, commercially valuable, and genuinely differentiated. Assess models, tools, datasets, vendors, and emerging technologies as part of the technical diligence process. Determine where AI creates a durable advantage and where simpler technology may be more appropriate. Present technical findings, risks, and recommendations to internal investment stakeholders. Support funded companies with architecture, data strategy, AI implementation, deployment, scaling, and early technical hiring. Develop AI‑enabled research and evaluation workflows that accelerate market analysis and technical diligence. Manage several early‑stage concepts simultaneously and quickly identify which should progress, change direction, or be discontinued. You Will Likely Have: 5+ years of experience building technology products, including meaningful work in an early‑stage or highly ambiguous environment. Experience taking a product, company, or major initiative from idea to working prototype or initial launch. Strong hands‑on experience building with modern AI and LLM technologies. Must have experience using tools such as Claude Code, ChatGPT, or similar AI development environments as part of your everyday workflow. The ability to prototype using Python and modern product‑development tools. Strong product judgment and the ability to determine which problems are worth solving. Experience making practical decisions around architecture, data, models, vendors, and build versus buy. The communication skills to work effectively with clinicians, executives, founders, engineers, and investment stakeholders. A commercial and entrepreneurial mindset, with an understanding of how technical decisions influence company creation. Comfort working across multiple ideas without predefined requirements or a traditional product roadmap. Healthcare experience is valuable but not required. Deep technical ability, product instinct, hands‑on building experience, and an authentic interest in improving healthcare are more important. You May Be a Strong Fit If You have founded or helped build an early‑stage company. You still enjoy building prototypes yourself, regardless of your current title. You are naturally curious and quickly identify the few questions that determine whether an idea will work. You can distinguish a meaningful AI advantage from a superficial feature or wrapper. You are equally comfortable discussing user problems, business models, data, and technical architecture. You enjoy working directly with users and domain experts rather than building from predetermined specifications. You know when to keep exploring an idea and when to stop investing time in it. Other founders and technical leaders regularly seek your advice on difficult product and engineering decisions. Why This Role?
