Clinical Medical Scientist

The clinical medical scientist (also known as medical laboratory scientist/medical technologist) performs complex laboratory testing to support diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions. This role requires advanced analytical skills, sound clinical judgment, and strict adherence to regulatory and quality standards. The clinical medical scientist ensures accurate, timely, and reliable test results across multiple laboratory disciplines.

Duties/Responsibilities Include the Following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs complex and specialized testing in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, immunology, and transfusion services.
  • Evaluates test validity, identifies abnormal or critical results, and ensures accurate reporting in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Runs and reviews QC, participates in proficiency testing, documents corrective actions, and maintains compliance with CLIA, COLA, and hospital standards.
  • Operates, calibrates, and troubleshoots laboratory analyzers, performs routine and advanced maintenance, documents performance and service issues.
  • Verifies proper specimen collection, handling, and processing; identifies and resolves specimen related issues.
  • Communicates effectively with providers, nurses, and laboratory staff regarding test interpretation, workflow issues, and critical values.
  • Follows all safety, infection control, and chemical hygiene protocols; maintains accurate documentation for audits and inspections.
  • Provides technical guidance to MLTs, lab assistants, students, and new staff contribute to competency assessments and procedure updates.
  • Prioritizes testing based on clinical urgency; supports efficient turnaround times; assists with process improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures immediate communication of critical (panic) laboratory values to the appropriate provider or clinical team so urgent medical intervention can occur without delay; recognizes laboratory values that meet the facilities defined critical thresholds and verifies results accuracy before calling.

Competencies in each discipline must be met, completed, and approved by the laboratory director.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or related field required. Prior clinical laboratory experience required to work independently on a solo shift, including safe operation of all assigned testing platforms, accurate result verification, and adherence to CLIA regulated procedures.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must be a national registered medical technologist; must meet all guidelines required under CLIA 88. BLS certification required.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of laboratory methodologies, instrumentation, and clinical significance of test results.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, troubleshoot issues, and apply critical thinking.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems and electronic health records.
  • Excellent attention to details and commitment to accuracy.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and ethical laboratory practices.
  • Must be available to work two to three nights/days a week on call for emergency lab services on a routine basis.
  • Available on call for emergency lab services three to four days/nights a week to accommodate coworker's illness, crisis, or vacations. Must be able to return to work within 15 minutes.
