Emergency Medical Technician

General Description Under general supervision, provides emergency medical care and transport for the sick and injured. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, delivers Basic Life Support (BLS) care, and assists Advanced Life Support (ALS) providers in accordance with established medical protocols, policies, and procedures.

Essential Functions

Responds to emergency calls; assesses patient condition; provides appropriate BLS treatment; assists ALS providers; transports patients to appropriate medical facilities; completes electronic patient care reports; maintains equipment and ambulances; participates in required training and meetings; complies with all departmental policies, SOGs, and regional/state protocols. Additional Duties: Performs station and equipment maintenance, participates in public education events, assists with training activities, and completes other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel. Responsibilities, Requirements and Impacts Requires sound clinical judgment, adherence to protocols, and the ability to function in high-stress environments. Actions and decisions have a direct impact on patient outcomes, public safety, and organizational liability. Data Responsibility: Accurately documents patient care information, maintains records, and utilizes electronic patient care reporting systems in compliance with departmental and regulatory standards. People Responsibility: Interacts professionally with patients, families, coworkers, hospital staff, and the general public while maintaining a high level of customer service and professionalism. Asset Responsibility: Responsible for proper use, care, and maintenance of ambulances, medical equipment, supplies, and assigned facilities to prevent loss and ensure operational readiness. Mathematical Requirements: Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations related to vital signs, medication assistance, and patient assessment as required within EMT-B scope of practice. Communications Requirements: Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; capable of completing reports, understanding protocols, and communicating via radio and electronic systems. Judgment Requirements: Exercises independent and sound judgment in emergency situations with guidance from protocols and medical direction. Complexity of Work: Work involves high levels of complexity due to unpredictable emergency environments, requiring rapid assessment, decision-making, and adaptability. Impact of Errors: Errors may result in serious injury or death, damage to equipment, legal liability, or loss of public trust. Physical Demands: Requires very heavy work, including lifting and moving patients exceeding 100 pounds, prolonged standing, bending, and operating equipment in adverse conditions. Equipment Usage: Utilizes ambulances, cardiac monitors/defibrillators, airway equipment, radios, immobilization devices, and other EMS-related tools and equipment. Unavoidable Hazards: Exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous environments, traffic hazards, adverse weather, and high-risk emergency scenes. Safety of Others: Maintains a high level of responsibility for the safety and well-being of patients, coworkers, and the general public.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: High school diploma or GED; minimum of one (1) year experience as a cleared EMT-B provider in an E911 system. Special Certifications and Licenses: Valid Virginia EMT-B certification; American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification; valid driver's license; EVOC certification; ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 (or ability to obtain within 3 months).
