Senior Electrical Systems Engineer, MR System Hardware Integration

Location: Billerica, MA (fully onsite)

Engagement: Contract, 12 months, with potential to convert to a permanent role

Reports to: Head of MRI Development


JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Electrical Systems Engineer supports a new MR research and product development effort through hands-on electrical system integration, troubleshooting, and general electrical engineering work. This role focuses on integrating and troubleshooting existing MR hardware and subsystems rather than new device design. MR-specific and RF skills can be developed on the job for candidates with a strong general electrical engineering foundation.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead electrical integration and troubleshooting of MR research systems and associated hardware, including the power cabinet, cable/wire assemblies, and magnet-adjacent equipment
• Perform traditional, hands-on electrical engineering work: motor and power amplifier support, cable design and wiring, electrical connections, and system-level troubleshooting
• Support RF coil integration and basic RF measurements using lab instrumentation (training provided for candidates without direct RF/MR experience)
• Investigate and resolve grounding, shielding, EMI/EMC, and ground loop issues affecting system performance and image quality
• Develop and execute system-level verification and performance test protocols
• Support electrical safety assessments and compliance activities in accordance with IEC 60601-1, working closely with and mentored by the Head of MRI Development, who holds ultimate regulatory responsibility
• Collaborate daily with the hiring manager, MRI engineers, and MRI scientists throughout product development
• Maintain system and subsystem BOMs and associated engineering documentation
• Split time roughly evenly between hands-on lab work and documentation/cross-team collaboration, with heavier lab time expected in the first 3 months while ramping up

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
• 5+ years of experience in electrical engineering, system integration, or hardware troubleshooting
• Hands-on experience with traditional electrical engineering work: motors, power amplifiers, cable design, and wiring
• Solid working understanding of EMC/EMI fundamentals from formal education or direct experience
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn new domains quickly

• Direct experience with MR systems, MR hardware, or medical imaging equipment
• RF coil testing, tuning, matching, and characterization experience
• Hands-on lab instrumentation experience (oscilloscopes, VNAs, spectrum analyzers)
• Familiarity with IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-1-2
• Experience with MATLAB and Python
• Prior experience in a regulated industry (medical device, aerospace, automotive, or similar); not required, as the hiring manager will mentor on regulatory-specific standards
