Qualifications Education/Certification: High School Diploma or GED, preferred; Texas Driver’s license Class C, required; Clear driving record, required. Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to read blueprints; familiarity with residential and commercial construction; painting skills. Experience: Three (3) years in carpentry, required; masonry and/or roofing experience, preferred. Workdays: 242 Auxiliary Pay Structure: Pay Grade 7 Pay Date: Monthly Hourly Pay Range: Minimum $18.70, Midpoint $22.26, Maximum $25.82 Note: Starting pay will be determined individually based on experience and wages of peer employees. Major Responsibilities and Duties / Essential Functions Construct and repair structural woodwork such as counters, cabinets, partitions, floors, doors, and framework. Work from blueprints, drawings, and oral instruction as appropriate. Use all carpentry and power tools in a safe manner. Install glass in windows, doors, and partitions. Install and replace ceiling, floor, and ceramic tile. Build cabinets and other wooden items in the carpentry shop, using woodworking machines (power saws, shaper, joiner). Assist in estimating costs of repair projects in terms of material. Comply with safety and hazardous laws and regulations. Assist in maintaining inventory control of tools and supplies. Attend meetings as required or directed by supervisors. Paint and spray‑paint hollow metal doors with an air gun. Spray acoustic indoor and outdoor ceiling and walls with a Monterrey finish. Install brick and block in construction jobs. Tape and float sheetrock. Install suspended ceiling grits, wall angles, and ceiling tile. Install and remove carpet and vinyl floor tile. Respond to after‑hour emergency calls in the evenings and/or weekends. Work outside of regular assigned work schedule to repair and/or replace facilities, including night and/or weekend duty as requested. Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards. Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor. Supervisory Responsibilities None Equipment Used Shop equipment and tools: Ladder, scaffold, small hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, sockets, pliers, crimpers, wire cutters, etc.), hand saws, power tools (saw, drill, sander, etc.), torque wrench, drills, drill press, grinder, air impact tools, jacks, lift equipment, air sprayer (paint). Vehicles and related equipment: Light van, seat belts, shoulder harnesses, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher, radio communication equipment. Working Conditions Mental Demands: Ability to concentrate, communicate effectively (verbal and written), interpret, reason, read, compute, instruct and maintain emotional control under stress; ability to handle several projects simultaneously with frequent interruptions. Physical Demands / Environmental Factors: Ability to frequently lift and carry heavy weights (45 pounds and over), sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds or ramps, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, pull, push, reach, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speech, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, frequent driving and traveling, exposure to temperature extremes (hot or cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration, microwaves, biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi), chemical hazards (asbestos, fumes, vapors, gases, dust, smoke), electrical hazards, working outside, prolonged exposure to sunlight, working with hands in water, moving objects or vehicles, machinery with moving parts, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces, alone, prolonged or irregular hours.
