Scrub Technologist

The surgical technologist works under the direct supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The surgical technologist is responsible for ensuring the operating room environment is safe. They ensure equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The surgical technologist handles instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. They understand the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. Duties include checking supplies and equipment needed for a procedure. They scrubs, gowns, and gloved themselves, the surgeon, and assistants. They perform appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the operation and before the incision is closed. The surgical technologist assists in draping the sterile field and passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure. They maintain the highest standard of sterile technique. They assist with the terminal cleaning of the room. The surgical technologist cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. They assist in prepping the surgical suite for the next patient. The surgical technologist is also responsible for working with new employees and training them in the role. They are not permitted to function in the circulating nurse role, first assistant role, nor administer medications or complete patient records.
