Police Officer Salary Range: $38.62 – $49.30 per hour. 10‑hour shifts, full time, CPOA represented positions, 18‑month probationary period. Responsibilities Provide proactive police protection and crime prevention consistent with community policing objectives. Detect and deter crime using community policing techniques, including education, problem‑solving, law enforcement, and a visible presence in assigned areas by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot. Stop motorists for traffic law offenses and take appropriate enforcement action. Investigate crime and traffic accidents by interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects; gathering and processing physical evidence and intelligence; preparing affidavits; executing search and arrest warrants; apprehending and arresting suspects; preparing required reports; coordinating prosecution; preparing cases for trial; testifying in court proceedings. Direct and/or assist other personnel at crime scenes, during investigations, or in performing other police services. Act as a resource to other personnel and departments in specialized knowledge, training, or experience; may testify as an expert witness. Provide community service through mediation, traffic control, crowd control, and resolving civil disputes; review incidents to determine police response options or referrals. Process prisoners, including photographing, fingerprinting, booking, and transporting as required. Review, analyze, and apply crime analysis data, identify trends, develop intervention methods, and execute plans with supervisors and staff. Lead and direct volunteers. Recruit and/or develop cadets, instruct on laws, department rules, equipment use, and safety techniques; evaluate progress of recruits. Utilize computers for research, report writing, booking, investigation, and communications. Perform administrative functions such as goal setting, training, budgeting, scheduling, equipment oversight, and other special concerns. Plan and participate in special events; perform public relations duties to inform and educate the community. Deliver presentations for groups and special populations. Execute additional assignments, such as training development, school‑age instruction, citizen training, research, and interagency teamwork. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree (90 quarter or 60 semester hours) from an accredited college or university is highly preferred. Basic DPSST Certificate required within 18 months of employment. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to collect, process, and evaluate complex material and information. Effective written and verbal communication, even in stressful situations. Manage multiple investigations and patrol duties, traffic enforcement, community service, special assignments, and training. Make appropriate decisions in highly stressful, rapidly deteriorating, and violent situations. Physical capability to walk, run, jump, lift, restrain combative individuals, and meet departmental physical requirements. Safely operate police vehicles; motorcycle operators must maintain required training and control skills. Meet state standards for vehicles, firearms, and equipment under emergency conditions. Use computers efficiently for essential functions. Strong interpersonal skills and respect for diversity; communicate with diverse groups. Prioritize workload, coordinate with agencies, adapt to changing priorities, and demonstrate flexibility and creativity. Maintain law‑enforcement code of ethics standards. Speak effectively in public and maintain confidentiality of information and protocols. Demonstrate commitment to sustainability. Special Requirements Intoxilyzer certification within 12 months of employment. CPR Certification. Valid Oregon driver’s license and driving record meeting City of Corvallis standards. U.S. citizenship within 18 months of hire; at least 21 years of age; no felony convictions or domestic assault misdemeanors; residency within 25 miles of Corvallis city limits (may be waived by the Police Chief). Successful completion of a pre‑employment drug screen. Pass the Department of Public Safety and Training medical examination (vision, hearing, psychological). Pass a comprehensive background investigation including criminal history and obtain an Oregon State Police Criminal Justice Information Systems clearance. Meet/maintain CALEA accreditation standards applicable to the position. Ability to testify in a court of law.
