Position Summary:
\n Assist in the nursing care of patients in the Acute Inpatient Hemodialysis Unit. Provide direct care to patients with renal disease requiring Hemodialysis. Provide for safe, clean environment and stock patient care areas. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.

Detailed responsibilities:
\n * PATIENT CARE - Assist in the pre, intra and post physical assessments of the patient's condition; collects, labels, transports and receives dialysis laboratory specimens
\n * PATIENT CARE - Perform arteriovenous puncture and administer intradermal lidocaine for dialysis access
\n * PATIENT CARE - Administer heparin, isotonic saline and oxygen
\n * REPORTS - Prepare, monitor, perform and report results of required quality control checks on hemodialyzer, hemodialysis machine, and water treatment systems
\n * ENVIRONMENT - Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with Hospitals standards
\n * SUPPORT - Clean patient care rooms, equipment and instruments; report equipment problems; order and store supplies; maintain appropriate PAR levels
\n * SCHEDULE - Schedule patients for outpatient follow-up appointments according to physicians orders; and schedule tests or procedures according to physicians orders, including creation of outpatient encounters, as needed
\n * PRIOR AUTHORIZATION - Submit requests for eligibility on patients for outside services as needed
\n * TELEPHONE - Answer telephone and intercom, take and communicate messages accurately to the appropriate person
\n * SUPPLIES & EQUIPMENT - Order supplies and equipment; receive and place items in their proper storage area; ensure equipment is in operating order
\n * SUPPLIES - Deliver dirty instrument trays and sharps containers to CDU, specimens to the lab; pick up pharmacy and CDU supplies as necessary
\n * CLEAN - Perform clean-up in helping the unit prepare for new patients to maintain a safe, clean environment
\n * TRANSPORT - Transport patients to and from appointments, clinics, laboratories, and/or treatments
\n * ADMINISTRATION - Perform various administrative functions such as monitoring expenditures and preparing reports and correspondence; may participate in a variety of research projects to develop service plans; may propose changes to program policies and procedures
\n * PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
\n * PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
\n * PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
\n * PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
\n * PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

Education:
\n Essential:
\n * High School or GED Equivalent

Experience:
\n Essential:
\n 1 year directly related experience

Credentials:
\n Essential:
\n * CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days
\n * Hemodialysis Certification in New Mexico

Physical Conditions:
\n Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
