Job Description

The Field Engineer supports ongoing transmission and substation reliability initiatives throughout South Texas. In this role, you serve as a technical resource for Protection & Controls testing, relay commissioning, contractor oversight, and quality assurance activities. You collaborate closely with internal engineering teams and third-party contractors to review testing results, verify compliance with utility standards, and contribute to long-term transmission system reliability and infrastructure modernization.

Responsibilities

• Support transmission and substation reliability initiatives across South Texas by providing technical expertise in Protection & Controls systems.

• Perform and support testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of substation protection systems.

• Review relay testing results to validate testing procedures, ensure quality standards are met, and confirm compliance with utility and transmission engineering requirements.

• Participate in relay commissioning activities, ensuring proper configuration, functionality, and integration with protection schemes.

• Provide contractor oversight during field and substation work, monitoring adherence to standards, procedures, and safety practices.

• Conduct quality assurance activities related to substation protection and controls, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions when necessary.

• Coordinate with internal engineering teams and third-party contractors to review test plans, analyze results, and support system reliability improvements.

• Support substation operations, including activities related to commissioning, maintenance, and system upgrades.

• Contribute to critical reliability and redundancy projects that enhance transmission and substation operations.

• Communicate effectively with project stakeholders to provide updates, clarify technical issues, and support decision-making.

• Work in both field and office environments, including daily reporting to the designated operations location and visiting substations as needed.

• Participate in occasional travel to substations and training events, including trips to other locations such as Dallas.

Essential Skills

• Experience supporting testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of substation protection systems.

• Hands-on utility or transmission substation experience in commissioning, maintenance, or system upgrades.

• Strong understanding of Protection & Controls systems and their application in transmission and substation environments.

• Relay testing experience, including reviewing test results, validating procedures, and ensuring compliance with quality standards.

• Experience with relay commissioning and integration into protection schemes.

• Ability to provide effective contractor oversight in the field, ensuring adherence to utility standards and procedures.

• Strong communication and coordination skills to work effectively with internal engineering teams and third-party contractors.

• Ability to work comfortably in both field and office environments.

• Utility industry experience strongly preferred.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline preferred.

• Experience with utility power systems and transmission engineering.

• Familiarity with NETA standards or commissioning practices.

• Experience in Protection & Controls engineering for transmission and substation systems.

• Ability to support long-term transmission system improvements and infrastructure modernization projects.

• Interest in long-term career growth within a utility environment.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and quality assurance activities.

Work Environment

This role is based in South Texas with daily reporting to Mission, TX, in a combined office and field-based environment. You can expect to be on-site approximately five days per week, working closely with substation and transmission facilities. The position includes occasional travel to substations and training events, including trips to locations such as Dallas. A company take-home vehicle is provided to support field work and travel to various sites. The work environment offers exposure to critical reliability and redundancy projects within a utility setting, with opportunities for long-term career growth and participation in significant infrastructure modernization efforts. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mission, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $72.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
